People are baffled why world's longest flight doesn't travel in a straight line

How's this for a detour? Over on TikTok people are losing their minds as to why the world's longest flight travels in an over-exaggerated curve and not in a straight line from New York City to Singapore.

Travelling at a whopping distance of 9,537 miles, people have had their brains twisted over its questionable logic.

TikTok user Travel With DJ documented the curved details of the world's longest non-stop commercial flight. The Singapore Airlines flight takes off from John F. Kennedy (JFK) airport and lands in Singapore Chani Airport.

Travelling from Singapore back to New York is thought to take 18 hours and 50 minutes, according to Upgraded Points.

Can’t dispute without further research. Long time since I dealt with this stuff.

I have never met a flat earther, but I have had a teetotal fundamentalist Baptist friend try to convince me that there was no wine at the wedding feast at Cana, only alcohol free grape juice. I asked my friend to see if that was possible by crushing fresh grapes during the summer and storing them in a clay pot for two weeks in his garage without them fermenting. Oh no, my friend explained, in that era the Jews grew wine grapes that did not ferment but called them wine anyway as a matter of custom.

Oh, wait! Here it is again...

No scheduled commercial flights over fly the South Pole since there are no great circle routes in use which do so. Flights from New Zealand to South Africa would fly over Antarctica but no airline currently flies that route.

It must be one of those "‘everyone knows’ things, like that apples float in water because they're less dense than the water, unlike a rock, which might have served Newton better.

...which might have served Newton better.

It might have served him better, but it would have been much more painful.

Standard ETOPS restrictions are 180 minutes from a suitable airport. The FAA grants ETOPS approval to an airline based on the particular aircraft, the airline’s maintenance program and the airline’s mechanical reliability for that aircraft. A brand new airline flying an ETOPS route for the first time might be limited to 60 minutes. The Boeing 777LR with the GE 90-110 engines were granted 210 minutes ETOPS by the FAA. If an airline has too many mechanical issues with the ETOPS significant systems on a fleet type, their ETOPS program is in jeopardy and they may have it suspended by the FAA.

Hmmm. You are leaving the world of physics and entering the world of physiques. And I don’t know much about either.

I don’t know why we don’t just get Musk to drill tunnels through the earth. You could have people jump into the holes in the U.S. and, at the center of the Earth, they would reach termimal velocity. After they passed through the center they would begin to gradually slow down so that when they reached the other end, they would be able to just jump out of the hole. Maybe a net or a mattress could be positioned at the other end for those people who were a little wobbly.

You, Sir, have delivered the best answer for the uninitiated / uninformed.
I have dealt with this in terms of radio propagation and coordinate translation. Fun Stuff.

Well, if the aircraft were hanging in above the surface and you waited for the spin to get you to your destination then you could only go East. If you were taking a flight from Chicago to Dallas then you never get there, you would fly over toward NY. If you wanted to get to Dallas then you would all have to stick your legs through the floor and spin the Earth northward behind you so that then you could draw Dallas toward you. Thats one of the big reasons I dont take any flights across water, I cant find a pair of swim fins that fits right.

It’s sad how many people are ignorant of basic geometry principles. The Earth is a sphere. The shortest distance from NY to Singapore would be to dig a hole between the two points. However, for a long list of reasons, its better to travel approx 10,000m above sea level along the surface. And thus a trip from New York to Singapore should go over the Artic region of this planet.

Thats good thinking. It would save all that money on terminals. Also they could hang things on the walls of the tunnel toward each end. No need for a duty free shop, as you slow down you could just grab things off the walls as you drift by and pay when you hop out.

I think we're onto something here. I'll tweet these ideas to Musk. I'm pretty sure he'll want to use them.

Just think, you and I will probably have a boring future (or is that Boring?).

Your claims are nonsense on their face. You don’t have any idea of what you’re talking about, because none of it is anything but regurgitated flat Earth hoax garbage. You’ve been had, but you’re not bright enough to grasp that. Just go right on repeating “your” idiocies.
