People are baffled why world's longest flight doesn't travel in a straight line

How's this for a detour? Over on TikTok people are losing their minds as to why the world's longest flight travels in an over-exaggerated curve and not in a straight line from New York City to Singapore.

Travelling at a whopping distance of 9,537 miles, people have had their brains twisted over its questionable logic.

TikTok user Travel With DJ documented the curved details of the world's longest non-stop commercial flight. The Singapore Airlines flight takes off from John F. Kennedy (JFK) airport and lands in Singapore Chani Airport.

Travelling from Singapore back to New York is thought to take 18 hours and 50 minutes, according to Upgraded Points.

[snip] Many believers in the flat earth claim such flights are impossible and not real. This is because most flat earthers accept a map that puts Australia and South America on opposite sides of their flat earth making them so far apart that you would have to travel at more than twice the speed of sound to make the journey in the twelve hours that these flights actually take to transport passengers from Auckland, New Zealand to Buenos Aires, Argentina. [/snip]
Flat earth: Are Australia to South America flights real?

The distance to the visible horizon depends upon the height of eye. From the bridge of most ships that I sailed on it was considered to be roughly six miles.

The plains are pretty flat but you meant “plane”.

Because the world is round and that doesn’t come across on maps. If you were to do this on a globe with a string, it would make much more sense.

Part of my time in Uncle Sam’s Canoe Club (USCG) was spent at the AMVER (Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue) Center, where the world-wide merchant vessel plot is maintained and updated. Basically the USCG would receive reports (position, course, speed, dest, etc) at least 1x daily from all the merchant vessels currently underway anywhere in the world. Sometimes these reports would include the designation “GC”, indicated the ship was sailing a Great Circle route.

So, my dear Tik Tok morons, not only do airplanes do this, but all those boats hauling all that crap you buy from China do this as well. If you can’t wrap your head around the fact that the earth is round, then maybe just trust those folks who have to buy diesel and jet fuel by the millions of gallons, who know how to burn it more efficiently than you.

FRegards,

H-T

You missed the Vedic Earth link at the site.

And this as well...
The Globe Earth is a Theory
So what they teach us about the earth globe spinning in space and rotating around the sun and so on is all a predictive model they have created. Over the years scientists have developed a very good model based on the premise that the earth is a ball spinning in space around the sun and the other planets in our solar system are also spinning around the sun. So with this hypothesis they have been able to create a theory that does a good job of predicting a lot of what we see happening in the universe around us.

Have you ever realized you’re in an argument with a true ‘flat earther’? I thought they were a joke, until I met one - it was, ‘oh boy, this guy is serious!’.

All the astronomincal bodies you can observe are all round. The Sun, the moon, etc. - yet they’re convinced the earth is flat and this flight plan is a big scam. All the evidence in the world doesn’t convince them.

They probably vote D.

My faith in humanity diminishes a little more each day it seems. Has no one ever looked at a globe?

Same here. I could have answered this in grade school.

A line is simply a circle of infinite radius.

If you turn the map upside down it all makes sense.

From the bridge of most ships that I sailed on it was considered to be roughly six miles.

And what happened when you looked through a pair of binoculars? How about some really strong binoculars?

Well, I don’t know if you consider this to be an average binocular:

We called them ‘Big Eyes’ and i could read newsprint from a mile away on the USS Holland’s set.

I know nothing of aerospace issues but I would think there might be lots of reasons why a plane doesn't just fly in a straight line.

It is the way the map is produced. The one in question is called a Mercator Projection. It is popular but is distorted, especially at the Poles.

The unique feature is you can take your starting point and destination, draw a straight line, then use that single compass heading to get to that destination. The issue is you will not actually be flying a straight line if you looked at the route on a globe.

The course provided in the article looks somewhat like a polar Great Circle route which actually would be the shortest distance and would look like a straight shot if placed on a globe but compass heading change while running a Great Circle route.

BWAHAHAHAHA...you think a 2d representation is evidence?

Is that a top down view of a glass, a plate, a bowl, or is it a sphere?
