He died in hospice care in Palm Springs, TMZ added.

Gallagher shot to fame after appearing on late-night television in the 1970s, though his fame persisted through homages and parodies,

On his Facebook page, the comedian promoted performances from as recently as October, noting that he was “feeling great!!” and wanted to work on “projects to make this world a ‘funner planet.'”

Oh no!

RIP, and thanks for the laughs.

One of my favorite Gallagher lines:

“I wish there was a way to increase the intelligence on TV. They got a knob that says ‘Brightness’, but it doesn’t work.”

I loved watching this guy. He was a real nut with his “Vegamatic” sledgehammer. I also loved it when he demonstrated the absurdity of English spelling, which I always hated in school.

RIP to a very funny guy. I really enjoyed his VHS tapes back in the 80’s. Mom even took me to one of his shows in Detroit back in the day.

Pizza Papalis ... Gallagher ... (we were smart and got tickets toward the back) ... Sledge ‘o’ Matic ... good times!

I liked his idea of having a gun that would fire a flag that stuck to a car with “Stupid” on it, when a driver did something stupid. And then if they had about 5 or 6 of them on their car, the cop pulls them over for being an a-hole.

Watermelon smasher? ? Isn’t that somehow racist? What was he implying?

His old reruns must be cancelled and YouTube cleansed of any trace of him

A buddy of mine lived in LA for a few years and managed an electronics and appliance store. Gallagher showed up one day driving an old station wagon painted watermelon green with pink tinted windows. Apparently a very nice guy and pretty much the same person in private as he was on stage. R.I.P.

Sad to hear this news. He was a well respected ‘hippy’; at least by me. I probably still have a shirt with watermelon juice stains on it in my closet someplace.

May he R.I.P...

“Watermelon smasher? ? Isn’t that somehow racist?”

Commies/socialists/leftists/Marxists/liberals are watermelons — green on the outside, red on the inside. It;s NOT racist. It’s PATRIOTIC to smash them.

Dang. He was a brilliant comedian. I saw him perform on Cape Cod back in the late '80s. I've never laughed so much.

He had a watermelon with a large vibrator installed in it...and a Hulk Hogan doll strapped on to it like a Bronco buster...then turned on the vibrator. What a sight that was.

RIP.

Gallagher went to court and put a stop to that.

He had a really odd family situation. I remember reading about it during the lawsuit. He was always the good son, excelled at school, had a great career, etc. His brother was, well, not like that. But the parents always made it very clear the brother was their favorite.

They pushed him into letting Ron tour using his old material. Gallgher agreed under certain conditions and Ron violated all of them.

He grew up in Tampa, IIRC. I was invited to go to one of his shows, but when I heard I would need to bring a plastic garbage bag to wear as an audience member, I declined. He was funny, but I didn’t want to be one who got all the splat of the watermelon all over me. Loved him, though!

He also remarked that he thought Florida made it look like we were pissing on Cuba.
