Vanity: Thank you for your service, but....
11/9/2022 | By Laz A. Mataz

Donald Trump is my favorite President, even more so than Ronald Reagan.

However, I think I’m moving on from him.

I like him in the role of a clarion-calling standard bearer, and his presidency was the best I have ever seen.

I don’t like him in terms of his failure to be a team player. I’m not even sure I like him as a kingmaker. Calling out numbers to make him look good, in a severely-disappointing election shows me he doesn’t care about the boots on the ground, but only how he looks.

Reagan faced the same Establishment hate and Media mocking, but he had a great way of playful rebuttal, with a twinkle in his eye and a little smile. America loved that. All the attacks mustered against him, failed, because he was able to gently turn it around on his attacker with a witty quip or a well thought out fact.

Reagan was also the author of the phrase, the 11th commandment, which was “Thou shall not attack a fellow Republican.”

Trump, on the other hand, has a serious ego problem. He cannot resist getting into a public verbal fight with anyone who criticizes him. While this was fresh and new in 2016, and propelled him into the presidency, it doesn’t work in 2022.

Also, the way Trump fights back is not nearly as good as Reagan’s style. Trump hasn’t got the charm of Reagan, and it’s beginning to hurt our side.

It is for these reasons that I must move on from Donald Trump. Sir, thank you for your incredibly wonderful service in 2016 through 2020. You made those years prosperous and sane. But it is time to move on.

I’m likely to get a ton of flak for this post. That’s okay, I can take it.

I think many here have fallen into the cult of personality trap. Trump was never about the man, it was about the ideas for me. We Conservatives prided ourselves on that core belief. We have lost that along the way here and became Democrats, making it about the personalities. Trumpism died last night, not Conservativism. To point out Trump endorsed candidates won blah, blah to transitively mean people still love Trump is kind of a weak argument. Kemp who is no friend of Trump won without his full-throated endorsement.

Trump's combative style worked 6 years ago but from the red ripple shown last night, it is not the prevailing wind. We'll win the House and about a 50/50 shot of taking over the Senate, so we will have a split government. We have to be gracious in defeat and really take a hard look at the quality of our candidates and the apparatus which failed this cycle in some key races.

Trump also needs to be gracious and accept as a man approaching his late 70s, he had his time and he can still do good as an elder statesmen, but as a viable candidate, he's done.

Which is why Laz just nailed the direction the wind is blowing.

I voted for Trump twice; but, I don't worship him. He, like any other human, has faults. His have become a liability to the Nation.

This is true.

Totally agree! I’m hopeful that Trump can read the tea leaves, especially what DeSantis did in Florida, which is the only place that a Red Wave existed yesterday, and gracefully bow out in ‘24.

I really don’t know if the results from last night are due to Trump, McConnell, abortion, social security, bad candidates, or outright cheating. Probably a mix of all of them.

I do know that Trump hasn’t changed. He’s still the same guy he was in 2016, for better or worse. He still commands large crowds at his rallies, but is also polarizing.

Will he win in 2024? At this point, I don’t know if any Republican will win in ‘24. Maybe if the country is desperate enough.

So before you discard Trump over his ego...

This isn't actually the case. The problem is that Trump discards HIS teammates.

I agree with your last paragraph. Pessimism is called for here regardless of what those who can’t face reality might say.

Trump has done a fine job, all things considered.

He took the brunt of the beating and the financial sacrifice that the democrats dole out whenever their hegemony is threatened.

His candidacy, MAGA coalition and presidency was and is a huge step ahead for Pro-America citizens.

To a great degree he moved the Pro-America and Not-Democrat-Party voters out of the clutches of the Deep State Republi-crats.

As the leader of the coalition he put together perhaps it is now time to take the next step and build on the foundation he built.

It is well known that a critical moment in the growth of a business, organization or movement is the point at which the strong, charismatic founder and leader must begin to divest authority and responsibility to a strong team to enable growth and longevity.

Those that are able to do so have a great chance of ongoing growth and success.
Others are less likely to grow beyond a one-man operation or to survive once they lose the strong man leader.

Right.

Also, lots of FReepers are obsessed with being the first to declare something - that way they can say ‘told ya so’.

First they boast how early they got on the Trump Train - now I guess they want to be able to say they were first to get off the Trump Train.

As if anyone cares.

DeSantis is every bit as conservative on the issues as Donald Trump without the personality quirks.

Yep sounds exactly like Trump.</s>

Hardly. I'm not voting for a 78 year old man. By then end of his Presidency he'd be 82. Um, NO.
