[Vanity] Seeking advice on quality shoulder holster rig for full-frame Sig 220 and extra mags.
The world we live in ^ | 11/07/2022 | Blueflag

Posted on 11/07/2022 5:38:05 AM PST by Blueflag

In order to improve real-world firearm accessibility primarily in-vehicle and also 'dismounted,' I seek to acquire a decent quality, maybe even leather, shoulder holster rig for my full frame SIG p220. I also want it to have the 2-mag pouch on the other side for well, extra mags AND to balance the weight of a loaded P220, which is non-trivial. It needs to have the straps that secure the rig to one's belt, as I have tried other holsters without them that just don't work for my heavy SIGs. They do work just fine for my much smaller XDS.

I live in GA and have my weapons carry license, so there is no concern like the 'old days' about printing. Frankly I don't care about other knowing I am armed (if they look carefully.) I will be wearing this while driving and it'll be set up for a right hand draw, even though I am about 55% left-handed otherwise. Outside the vehicle I will wear a covering garment. I am not into open carry unless I am in the woods.

SO, GOT RECOMMENDATIONS?

All of the above, with these qualifiers:

I am looking for (a) a recommendation on a shoulder holster rig that is already made to fit a SIG P220, (commercial off the shelf) and (b) is from an outfit you'd recommend.

I have my prejudices: (1) real pistol options start with SIG. (2) my favorite caliber is .45.

I welcome your thoughts.

I buy alot from Craft Holsters. I have a shoulder rig that i’m breaking in for my Beretta Cheetah. It is nice, fits well and is made very well. IT is almost infinitely adjustable. and has the two mags for balance.

They can speak with me on my front porch if they desire. Security cam with mic will record it all.

All kidding aside, holsters and guns are no big deal. And outside the metros of ATL, Athens and Augusta, GA makes Tennessee and Texas (legal) gun ownership look like rookies ;-)

Shoulder holsters are for dumb old farts who don’t mind sweeping everyone in their AO... because that’s what happens. Especially for anyone behind you.

They weren’t as dumb when everyone went around with 6 shooters and a double action trigger and/or hammer lock, but if using a semi-auto, shoulder holsters are an ND waiting to happen.

And they’re not tactical either. Shoulder holsters need to stay in 1970s TV shows where they belong.

Galco makes some nice shoulder rigs. I’ve used their Jackass rig for years to carry a p229 and 2 mags and though I’m not a real big fan of shoulder rigs anymore, it balanced the weight nice and served me well. Galco makes some good quality products.

Has anyone had experience with a fanny pack type of carry case (worn in the front, actually)?

That, I think would be most practical for me.

The first thing you need to decide is nylon or leather. A good, worn in leather rig, is nice. Polyester is….polyester.

Wear a kilt and use a sporran. That way you look more stylish, and everyone will be too busy wondering if you are going regimental to think about the fact that you might be packing.

So are you recommending any of the following options, or just ragging on shoulder holsters ;-) ?

1. a secure in-vehicle mount and when dismounting, transition to a IWB at 3-4 o’clock?
2. a chest rig?
3. a thigh-rig?
4. other?

What’s your recommendation?

While not ‘dumb’ I do qualify in many ways as ‘old’ on the calendar. So there’s that.

The SIG p220 is a double action platform I am VERY familiar and comfortable with and I can assure you (a) I have good trigger discipline on a draw from ANY holster and (b) my SIG has a 12 pound initial trigger pull. ND is way down the list of concerns. ALWAYS something to be cognizant of, I get that, but I put it in the unlikely category.

I am not very concerned about being tactical, or even tacticool. The p220 is by modern standards a large gun and OWB is the only comfortable way to wear it. Ya can’t wear it a 3/4 o’clock IWB and sit to drive. Thigh rig is stoopid for me. Chest rig is for those folks down-range or those at risk of dangerous game.

AS for sweeping everyone in the AO... I understand and acknowledge your point. IF your firearm is out of ANY holster, ‘sweeping’ is one of the basic rules to observe. Putting this in the ‘considered yet moving on’ category. Please refer back to my comments about trigger discipline and trigger pull/double action.

NET: your opinions are noted. I still seek a quality shoulder rig so I can comfortably drive with ready access, AND I don’t have to relocate the firearm to a different holster when out of the vehicle.

Thanks. P229 and the P3XX series are all smaller than my (old but wonderful) P220s.

Why’d you move on from shoulder holsters and what do you do while driving?

Yeah, I’d *prefer* leather. Like you say, buying a polyester holster is akin to buying planned obsolescence. I am on #3 for my XDS’s IWB.

I have a falco rig that came with a pistol I traded for years ago

It’s nice and the previous owner used and loved it (it’s too small for me to use effectively or comfortably and don’t need a shoulder rig anyway)and it seems well made
