Just one in five of Generation Woke admire Churchill, poll reveals... Twenty years after he was voted the greatest Briton of all time

He has been voted the greatest Briton of all time – a heroic wartime leader who took on Hitler against the odds.

But Winston Churchill, it seems, is no longer so universally admired.

Just one in five 18-to-24-year-olds say they have a positive view of the former Prime Minister, compared with 58 per cent of over-65s, a poll has revealed.

Educational experts say the findings are down to changes to the school curriculum, which have led to Britain’s past being portrayed in increasingly negative ways.

The survey, commissioned by the think tank Policy Exchange, revealed views of history depended not only on age but also political leanings. More than 60 per cent of Conservative voters in the 2019 Election admire Churchill, compared with just 22 per cent of Labour voters.

Across all ages, 36 per cent of the public had a positive image of the wartime PM, down from 47 per cent in a 2018 YouGov poll.

In a 2002 BBC survey, Churchill was voted the greatest Briton of all time. But in recent years, Left-wing critics have increasingly focused on his apparent racism and his support for the British Empire, rather than on his stand against Hitler and the defeat of fascism.

The backlash has led to his name being removed from school houses, while the charity formerly known as the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust has changed its name to The Churchill Fellowship and removed images of him from its website.

Views on colonialism in the poll, carried out by People Polling, also vary by age. Just 17 per cent of young people believe the British Empire did more good than harm, compared with 61 per cent of the 65-plus group.

I doubt one in five of this generation was even properly educated enough to know who he was!

Wow, a complete about face just since 2002. If nothing else, the Woke forces behind historical revisionism sure are efficient.

I am certain Google, Yahoo and others deliberately hid them, but there used to be sources I quoted here that said over 40% of American young people could not answer correctly which came first and second: the American Civil War and World War II.

However, here is an example of the history knowledge today:

According to the survey, only half the American public could correctly identify when the Civil War took place and just 18% knew the Emancipation Proclamation meant slaves were free in areas still in rebellion. When asked to match Lincoln with the famous phrase from the Gettysburg Address “that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth,” more respondents chose a passage from the Declaration of Independence than the lines from Lincoln’s pen.

Nearly one in five Americans failed to identify John Wilkes Booth as Lincoln’s assassin and one in three could not identify Lincoln as a leader of the Union Army. Hundreds of respondents chose “Confederate Army,” the Revolutionary War’s “Continental Army,” World War II’s “Allied Forces,” or simply wouldn’t answer.

The historical revisionists have been busy.

Just one in five 18-to-24-year-olds

Assuming the age range is inclusive it is still surprising that a generation is now 7 years. Puberty must be coming earlier now.

It is easy to see with hindsight.

There wasn't a single leader in WWII who did not make multiple mistakes.

The crimes of Winston Churchill

medium.com

Churchill was a genocidal maniac. He is fawned over in Britain and held up as a hero of the nation — voted ‘Greatest Briton’ of all time. Below is the real history of Churchill. The history of a white supremacist whose hatred for Indians led to four million starving to death. The man who loathed Irish people so much he conceived different ways to terrorise them. A racist thug who waged war on black people across Africa and in Britain. This is the trial of Winston Churchill,

I’m not up on my UK vs ‘continent’ differences. I know on that in Europe generally ‘liberal’ refers to those who favor free markets, personal fredoms and various other things associated with US conservatives whereas ‘conservative’ refers to a reversion to a serfs and government caretaker model more akin to modern US ‘progressives.’ Is the UK terminology (at least back at the time of the quote) more aligned with US terminology?

And how best to destroy a country than to destroy its young people’s belief in its goodness. The same thing is happening in this country. Why would anyone want to defend a country they believe is racist, bigoted, evil and ultimately flawed?

Wasn’t Churchill the one who declared “We shall fight them on social media, we shall fight them at the latte cafes, we shall fight them on Amazon. We shall never surrender.”

Or something like that.

“I don’t know who he is so I cannot have a positive view of him….”

I fear many polls are like this.

This is the trial of Winston Churchill, the enemy of all humanity.

They probably think he was a king in the 14th century, back when WW II was fought.
