Speaking of Marianne Faithfull, give a watch to the movie “Irina Palm” in which she stars. It is off the beaten path but IMO well worth a watch. She does a very good job of her character. While it is a serious pieces, there are a some laughs here and there.

“Middle-aged Maggie must find a way to get enough money for her grandson’s lifesaving medical treatment and lift the dwindling hopes of her only son Tom and his wife Sarah. Desperation leads the respectable widow to work in a sex club.”

There is a twist to her job, not quite what you expect. It also demonstrates what reserves people can call up when their family is in need.

Glamorous lives of the rich and famous.

Not:

Horrible. You'd think that Mick might toss her a couple of mil for old time's sake.

She had trouble staying on the notes in this live version but as a young guy in junior high I didn’t notice. Record hit was better.

I haven’t heard a vibrato like that since Tiny Tim.

She used some unusual instrumentation. Her rendition of As Tears Go By (1964) features an English horn--probably the first rock and roll song to do so. A harpsichord features prominently in Come and Stay With Me (1965).

I really had a crush on her in the sixties until I found out she was a chain smoker.

That ruined it.

Marianne Faithful was blessed with two things: a father who said he was proud of her and a strong love for her father. Those two things will help anyone survive the 60’s and 70’s.

Marianne Faithful gave the best musical performance I ever saw. It was in ‘87 or ‘88 on weekday night I went to see her at the old 9:30 Club in D.C. She sang for two hours without a break sitting on a high stool under a single blue light accompanied by only a bongo drummer with some sort of wheel used to adjust the tone of the drum. There were probably no more than twenty people there that night, but no matter, both she and we were transfixed as she poured volumes of emotion into each song, like Broken English, with a raspy voice and chiseled features. She was dead to music for twenty years, at times nearly dead herself, an addict living on the street, forgotten, but that night she was transcendent purity, beyond beauty, beyond time, age, or place.

Growing up with the Beatles & Stones, Marianne Faithfull had an innocent & not-so-innocent sexy look and THAT VOICE.

Her cover of the Beatles song was not indicative of her talent.

A better representation is her cover of the Stones’ - As Tears Go By (1965)
