Twitter layoffs gutted election information teams days before midterms

Devastating cuts to Twitter’s workforce on Friday, four days before the midterm elections, are fueling anxieties among political campaigns and election offices that have counted on the social network’s staff to help them combat violent threats and viral lies.

The mass layoffs Friday gutted teams devoted to combating election misinformation, adding context to misleading tweets and communicating with journalists, public officials and campaign staff.

The layoffs included a number of people who were scheduled to be on call this weekend and early next week to monitor for signs of foreign disinformation, spam and other problematic content around the election, one former employee told The Washington Post. As of Friday morning, employee access to internal tools used for content moderation continued to be restricted, limiting staff’s ability to respond to misinformation.

What are they griping about? They can still post their "before and after" sex change pictures on Facebook.

“fueling anxieties among political campaigns and election offices that have counted on the social network’s staff to help them combat violent threats and viral lies.”

Unless those threats and lies are directed at Republicans.

Were the people that were fired the same people in contact with the FBI/inJustice depts?

Were these the people that believed Hunters laptop was Russin disinformtion but the Steele dossier (with Hillary's fingers all over it) was genuine.

I am not really worried that these people were fired. I think society is safe.

Allow me to reuse an expression that all the fans of censorship liked to pull out: “It’s a private company, they can do what they want”

Technically no one has been laid off yet. They are on a full pay with benefits 90 day non work period to satisfy WARN laws. Then on 2/2/23 they will be laid off with severance offer.

So, ONE (Anti-) Social media company returns us to pre-internet days, when folk had to think for themselves, and its a major crises?
I resent the insulting assumption that we are all incapable of independent thought.
(Reminds me of the old “Clean and articulate” racism).

anxieties among political campaigns and election offices that have counted on the social network’s staff...

I'll bet they have. I'll just bet they have.

It's a great thing that Twitter's ex-staff managed to delay this acquisition until such a perfectly strategic moment. Well done, folks!

So who decided that Twitter was the election information gatekeeper anyways?

It’s hard to believe that there are people actually concerned that social media was doing something as serious as this and that them not doing it any more is a bad thing.
