“This is not high school, this is college people.”

May be a year older, but considering the instructor didn’t even know the name of a failing student is a failure on the part of the instructor. The “teachers” don’t lose the responsibility to figure out how to get the curriculum of the individual class across just because they are offered a higher level of instruction and the pay that goes with it. The ability of the student to learn should have been already determined by transcripts and counsel interviews during admission. If the student is incapable then that topic should have been brought up long before classes opened.

The instructors in college are not there to determine the capacity of the students. They are there to find the best way to pass information to the learners for success. The point this particular problem occurred was just as much a mistake of the instructor as the student, if not more. And if enough students are having trouble, then it may be the instructor as much or more than the student that is the problem.

When I retired from the military, I took a junior college class in literature to find out what was the accepted style and level of writing in today’s society. It helped me greatly on my resume. We had a first year college level instructor that was making a number of mistakes and at one point, nobody was even sure they were passing the course with their inability to complete assignments that changed every other day in class.

I voiced my opinion in class when he pressured me to do so, and he was not happy with my thoughts. Shortly after that, another student went to his boss, the dean of instruction, to discuss the class problems. Right after that he was openly belligerent to me in class numerous times until I made an appointment to see him. He had determined in his mind that I was the one to go over his head and I informed him it wasn’t me, but I did know who had. I further told him if I was going to do that, I would be mature enough to tell I was. He mentioned to me that I had called him out in class. I reminded him I didn’t want to do that and told him so at the time but he was insistent I speak my mind.

Funny thing is I got the highest grade in the course. As an old NCO, I was trained to figure out how to get rid of problems. So I showed him how to protect himself and how to compromise on the assignment problems he had created. He was not rehired the next year there. But that wasn’t my fault.

College instructors don’t walk on water. And they make foolish mistakes sometimes based on their failed determinations of considering themselves bullet proof and beyond reproach. These are the type that are dangerous to the finished product of the educations system, in the US. And judging by the product they are pushing through, there are too many of them already. Bad enough they shouldn’t have been there for problems like math challenged or illiterate. But this type of action is like throwing gas on a fire.

I’m glad that jerk got fired. Professor doesn’t even know the name of the student and it’s November. What a horrible horrible person.

My comment is based on the fact that when some ‘professor’ winds up in the news for outrageous acting-out, it’s almost always an adjunct. A lot of them have been ‘featured’ here on FR.

That certainly doesn’t mean that every adjunct is like this; it means, just as I said, that those who end up in incidents like this usually ARE.

He’s a jerk for sure. But he’s not alone in not caring to know the names of the students in November.

“But the student paid a hefty tuition to take that class”

God forbid you should mention that someone pays for this kind of treatment.

Can you ever imagine someone at a car dealership doing this to a customer? Or a Real Estate agent?

Universities are no longer Ivory Towers where a priesthood holds sway. They are now just another business: you should get something for your money. The age of Imperial Colleges with cute little costumes and stuffy, arrogant former grad students (”professors”) is gone. A good education now can be had online from the world’s best teachers.

And there’s only a few of them. But a good online course makes them available to millions.

Mr. Screaming Clown Prof just got exposed to market forces.

Big mistake by the prof. He failed the kid, and that’s called doing his job (not passing students along). Beyond that, let the kid get in trouble for making a scene.

For teachers, there’s so much more power in calm than angry. I see teachers all the time lose all authority by getting noticeably angry in front of students. Sadly, education schools teach pedagogy and “learning strategies” but not people management, which is what they most direly need.

It happened only once when I was in college. One of the students had asked for a due date extension on a paper which was granted to the entire class. When the extended due date came around, the student who asked for the extension was still late with it.

I’ll bet there’s more to the story than what appears in the video.

I agree. Maybe the student rejected the teacher's woke anti-America version of history, refused to give woke answers on the homework and tests, and went off on the student for not ingesting his enlightened teachings.

I took a course on political philosophy taught by a well-known professor. Almost all the students were political science majors taking a required course. All those Polly Sigh majors failed the very important final.

As I recall, the flunked could then opt for pass-fail-incomplete grades.

I always had my students place a name plate in front of them and insisted they refer to me as “sir,” and students as “Mr” or “Miss” as required. Basic respect was a requirement in my class.

A very important point, though we may never the whole case and circumstance. Yes, your points are right - heck I’d use them now talking to a foreman or general foreman. An apprentice or junior? Sure, they are a different level of authority and experience.
But to not the name of a student who is failing? No, I cannot excuse that error. But, then again, if the student has never been in the class - has never asked for after-hours help, why would the professor know.

If this is the only thing that’s occurred that resulted in the prof’s termination, then TSU should be closed and everyone sent home.
