Critics and viewers alike have heaped praise on Netflix's new World War One movie All Quiet on the Western Front and called for it to be nominated for an Oscar.
The film follows the life of German soldier Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer), who, after enlisting in the Army with his friends, finds himself confronting the harrowing realities of war, shattering their hopes of becoming heroes.
Since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the drama has earned critical acclaim, and is Germany's submission for Best International Feature Film for the 2023 Academy Awards.

As I have posted before, it’s important to read the books.
Not only “All quiet on the Western front”, but the
companion volume, “The Road Back”, in which Paul and
his comrades survive the war and have to return to
a country in turmoil and the effects of PTSD.
Even the war dog, suffers from it’s effects.
I look forward to seeing this rendition in any event.
Yes, the original film had some embellishments as well but they were done within the context of the story and largely worked.
Looks like mixed reviews from FReepers.
Any black people in roles they normally wouldn’t be in? How about the obligatory homosexual? Transvestites? Ultra-powerful woman that can destroy a man with a punch?
If it doesn’t have any of those things, no awards!
The small scene in the end with the French had some black soldiers, probably from the former colonies. Other than than, lily white. It’s a sad movie and the slaughter was immense. They just ran into bullets. Losing thousands of boys a day on all sides. Miserable.
Another good anti-war film from 1930s Germany is WESTFRONT 1918.
I have seen the 1930 version several times in TCM. Once they even showed it as a silent film with subtitles. Once.
“I also watched The Final Battle. Highly recommended!”
I would be interested in watching The Final Battle, but I’m having trouble finding it. I did find that there is a DVD available titled ‘Okinawa: The Final Battle.’ Is that it?
Spoiler alert!
They lose the War ?
Sorry, I assumed everyone saw or read All’s Quiet. You’ll still like to watch. The ending isn’t a cliff hanger.
The background music!! My ears, my ears!! Tuba and Base fiddle?? IMO, the worst music sound track ever. With all the new graphics added it was the best of the previous ones visually.
Don’t know about this movie but I would pay to see a part two of They Shall Not Die by Peter Jackson.

I just watched it. Don’t waste your time. Other recent World War movies are all better than this one.
The face make up and expressions were ridiculous. Not believable.
If I were in a battle, I’d drop my rifle every chance I got. /s
I don’t bother with any movie I have to ‘read’. If I am going to read, I’ll get a book.
Too many closed-caption/subtitles run by too fast or fade against a light background.
And, if one is reading subtitles, the eyes are not on the movie action.
It is rather silly to do subtitles anyway — most watchers know it is a movie with actors. Subtitles do not make it anymore authentic.
Oops. My apologies. It’s The Forgotten Battle. It’s a Dutch film about the Battle of Scheldt. Centers around a Brit Soldier, a Nazi Soldier and the Dutch Resistance.
Totally agree. I’m starting to explore foreign films and I’m finding a treasure of original stuff. Over Halloween we watched a couple of Korean horror flicks and all I can say is, “WOW!” Also watched a couple of Russian war movies... Very good and a Dutch war movie. Hollywood hasn’t done anything original in years, but these cats overseas sure are. I can put up with the subtitles.
He did. Didn’t even hesitate either. The stab in the back wasn’t lost on me either. Horrible. Those French troops had to be completely astonished by the attack literally minutes before the war ended. Maniacal and egotistical people in uniform will get people killed to satisfy their own self-worth.
That got me thinking, the Nazis banned the 1930 version, would they have banned this one? I'm not so sure.
Russians do good war movies.
It’s beautiful to look at. The cinematography, the locations, the special effects are great, but it bears little resemblance to the novel. His basic training, relationship with Kat, significance of the boots, the night in the shell hole with the French Poilu and the circumstances/meaning of his death were omitted or glossed over. Events and actions occur that don’t make sense unless you’ve read the book. It’s a stunning movie, but it’s not ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’...
