Engineering Economics was one of the best and easiest classes I ever took. I also took Agriculturial Economics from a world class professor in the field. Wish I had taken more. Both classes served me well in business development. I did the project evaluation and justifications for billion dollar projects and wrote the finance memorandum to the board for these. No MBA, just a couple of economics classes.
She is not the Lone Ranger by a long shot. People now are being taught they do not have to pay the debts they make. It is another step in the Destruction of America.
All we get is NWA and Fort Smith news and I hardly ever watch it. I used to listen to KRMG faithfully when John Erling was on even when I was half-way around the world once streaming became available. I had no inkling this had happened.
Horrible is all I can say.
I have known hopelessness but never like this.
We don’t help the working or the want to work. It is all or nothing. Our system is geared to cut people off at a very low threshold, not enough for most to live on. It is not geared to help people get on their feet.
I have no idea about what these people tried to do but I do know our system rewards slovenly people who come to depend on the system for virtually everything. Like caged animals they give up every shred of dignity and freedom for a hand out. That just should not be. It is inhuman and criminal.
Tragic.
If you could discharge them in bankruptcy this would all end and people like her would either pay as you go (because there isn’t a torrent of money loaned to study anything to anyone that can fill a chair) or they would fill the jobs begging for their intelligence level like towel attendant and dog poop harvester...
Otherwise, she can just pay $5/month to stay current and go without plastic credit and let it run until she dies of old age.
Do they even care? Your standard is probably old, like mine.
I don’t think there is a standard to be considered a serious minded person any longer.
Did you include the necessary ESG evaluation criteria? These days, ROI and IRR just don’t cut it.
(kidding!)
That’s just so, so yesterday.
A lot of masters came at nigh and took a very long time. There was no such thing as online. I tried it and it was just not worth the sacrifice for me but especially for my family. My excuse for quitting the pursuit is that my job was constant. The oilfield is a cruel mistress that knows no hours, holidays or weekends.
BINGO!
Oh I do so regret that I missed all that.
There were enough threats in the physical, political, regulatory and business world with a commodity based industry venturing out to 5,000 feet of water and beyond to go around.
I would still like the work but I just could not tolerate all that goes with it now. When I left 6 years ago it was bad but they couldn’t intimidate me with threats of retribution if I didn’t participate in the social justice warrior scene. I did see the writing on the wall clearly though and got while the getting was good. My protectors left a year before I did. The left behinds were all Koolaid drinkers.
People used to calculate their payments via the old pencil and paper method and could determine that paying $300 per month on a debt that size would not even begin to touch the principal.
Now, a payment calculator is on-line and readily available so that even people that can’t do math can calculate principal plus interest to determine how much they have to pay to reduce the amount of their loan. They could pay the normal payment, plus an additional payment on the principle amount each month in order to reduce the amount of the loan. An extra $100 per month would make great strides in doing so.
I have to admit, I have no sympathy for anyone that took out a loan for this much money for an “education” that brings them so little benefit. For that amount of money, they could have purchased a small home in a depressed neighborhood or rural county, put a bit of work into it, and then sold it for double the investment after a few years. Meanwhile, they could have taken a job almost anywhere near that home, worked their butt off to move up into management, and be bringing in a nice income. All of this could be done without a “higher” education certificate.
People this dumb shouldn’t be allowed to breed.
In short, this person is a theif.
I agree that she should be paying more, but sometimes not that easy with life circumstances...I don’t know enough to say more except that seems she started school when barry was prez, and he was pushing college (and indebtedness) big time for ALL students regardless of cost or their qualifications.
I will say that I remember going to high school parent programs for college-bound students during that time...And the guidance counselors, principals, etc. encouraged both parents and kids to pick school of dreams...One comment, “Do you like the campus?” was one of the things that stood out to me...The campus? Seriously? Another comment, “Don’t worry about how to pay” (the debt). Get a loan, fill out FAFSA...As I listened to these programs, I thought what a load of crap!!! Outside of a house, a car and raising kids, for all but the upper crust, a college education is the most expensive purchase anyone is going to make so need to be logical, smart, realistic...Get a major where you can make a living...Dreams can be attained through hobby or transition to day job at some point.
Should add, there was not guidance on career fields from the high school...And not that our kids needed it from school as we had played the high school game, some student might.
From my experience, ours was a great school district, but right there at those seminars is where the education system started the big fail...the high school wanted to have bragging rights on kids going to very expensive “elite” colleges. It was all about the reputation of the high school and community—not what was reasonable/best/realistic for the student or their family.
Going to the community college was considered a punishment for slacking senior year...A threat to be used by parents if students were not working to potential their senior year.
Frankly, given the times in which we live, I would encourage kids to take basic classes at community colleges as they are at least 50% less than 4-year schools (tho still expensive). Not to mention that kids could live at home for a couple years saving money and not be indoctrinated so easily by radical professors who seem to have infiltrated nearly every university in every subject.
IMHO whole education system is broken (like everything else...). Especially the higher education system.
Perhaps, instead of charging exorbitant tuition, room and board, and other fees, all of these “non-profit” “institutions of higher learning” with their billions in endowment funds should help out struggling students by lowering tuition costs as well as being very upfront about the job opportunities/salaries upon graduation...
Instead of paying 4-yr university presidents $550,000+ per year (city/jr colleges are running $450,000+) and building lavish dorms, administrative buildings, and classrooms with all the amenities of a Trump hotel (I have been to some on college visits), they could lower the cost of getting an education...and I should specify a decent education.
A decent education that is not laden with woke propaganda; one that provides for a decent life should not be unattainable as it currently seems to be for middle class students who don’t wish to go into radical woke fields or go to trade school.
It was attainable when my spouse and I went to college. Part-time jobs during the year, scholarships/grants, and full-time jobs in summer were enough to fund most of our college debt.
And the taxpayers should not be on the hook for a bailout. Again, how about those university endowments?! Seriously?! Non-profit?!?!
Know about which I speak. Tho my kids were debt free upon graduation from undergraduate, one married a spouse with maaaaajor debt...Great spouse, but their debt has been a hinderance ever since...
So, I have a family member now enrolled at fairly prominent university for grad school...$76,000++ for MS.* Yet school has a $9.32B endowment?! (That is not the largest endowment. Harvard had $53B+).
*They are getting funding from savings and work reimbursement... Should add that they’re changing fields due to the COVID CMS health care worker mandates...Prior to COVID and brandon, they were very happy in medical field pursuing a MPH in infection control, but since they will not get the clot shot and don’t want to be in position advocating experimental gene therapy for others, they are moving in different direction. Thanks brandon!
Amazing how things can change over a few years...I read the full article you posted, and I viewed the girl as uninformed, but also as a victim. She trusted a system that cared little about her. Sad no one guided her...her parents? trusted teacher or counselor, clergy, a financial advisor, bank loan dept? etc. But she is a first-generation college student, so maybe they were caught up in idea of her going to college.
Oh how I miss “Orange Man Bad!!”
Get the government out of this business. Private sector companies wouldn’t loan that kind of money 💰 for such a risky return.
And high schools should prepare students with basic living skills. Mine did not.
My bet is that any guy she does meet she doesn’t tell him about her massive debt. Lots of women do it.
Going to Community College for me was not having the funds to pay for 4 year even public university! You disparage students attending as deficient which is not always true. I love that there is a stepping stone Community College for those who are challenged financially. Those who yes need remedial education…and those in the community no matter what age may seek further education…. There were many seniors in my anthropology and geology courses…they actually provided the insight of an older generation in class discussions. Blessed to have known them.
Now all they have to do is Duck Duck Go her and they will know all about it.
Then they can Duck Duck her and Go.
I guess a smart man would do it, but I’m guessing there are plenty of guys who are thinking about other things first.
"Exterminate! Exterminate!"
Oh, you weren't talking about the 'Dr. Who' kind?
