Tinnitus is a symptom of an Acoustic Neuroma also known as a vestibular schwannoma which is a tumor that starts its life on the eighth cranial nerve which is the nerve that hearing is transmitted on...I have had 2 AN’s, the first one destroyed my hearing in my Left ear, the 2nd one 20 years later again started out on what was left of the hearing nerve and reformed but this one was way to involved with nerves so I had Gamma Knife Radiation. Thankfully I had them cut that nerve during the 1st surgery or the Tinnitus would have literally driven me insane...It was past horrible before the surgery, quit as a mouse now thank goodness. If you are experiencing Tinnitus you could have a AN. I strongly urge you to get an MRI.

"The cause for me was ibuprofen (Motrin), that I took to help me get to sleep. When I stopped taking ibuprofen, the tinnitus stopped."

Yes, NSAIDS will make it worse. I discovered foam ear plugs twirled tightly and inserted deep in the ear canal help because you hear your own rhythmic breathing that covers the high pitch whine when going to bed. When your respiration slows down, you are lulled into sleep by the slower steady rhythm. Guess it's like white noise generators. Some say ear plugs are claustrophobic, not for me. I rarely notice it in the day, only when going to sleep.

I am a supporter of cannabis. I have a dog in the fight as I use to manufacture extraction equipment so take it as you will. I do not use it myself. I have seen THC and CBD used with amazing results for neurological issues with amazing results.

This tinnitus came very rapidly, about two weeks ago. It's getting better, but I'm getting older, and that is the norm.

Do you have any idea why you have contracted tinnitus - except for aging?

E.g., were you exposed to high noise levels at work, or did you routinely listen to rock music with the volume turned up?

Any environmental factors at all that might have contributed to your contracting this condition?

Regards,

Right ear only for a long time. Seems worse now but probably because I’ve more peace and quiet now. It’s never ending and always there. You just have to learn to ignore it. It’s one good thing about death - I won’t have to listen to it anymore

Hearing aids help a lot.

That's what the VA told me. After months of tune-ups all it really did was amplify the ring.

There is also a sleep aid Ativan (lorazepam) that will knock you out and not leave you groggy in the morning like Valium or other benzos. It has been cross prescribed for years as a sleep aid with little to no side effects, and not addictive nor tolerance buildup.

The proper name of the institution is JOHNS Hopkins.

It's a mistake often made to leave off the first S.

Years ago, Went to a renowned ENT doctor who proclaimed that it was all in my head, and that I should imagine that it’s not there. I responded with “you’ve never had tinnitus, have you doctor?” He replied that he had suffered tinnitus some years ago for several weeks. My response was, “then you really didn’t have any idea of what constant noise in the head (even asi a typing this) is like. Try holding a lighted candle til the wick burns to your fingers, and imagine that it doesn’t burn, AND IT NEVER GOES OUT “

The worst time is when being awakened by something during a deep sleep and taking an hour to be exhausted enough to fall asleep in the quiet of the night.

Drugs and alcohol are palliative. Not good.

I’m ashamed to admit that I have a “cautious” view of the world of medicine.

Doctors are people after all. We should be very particular about our choices.

Hope your problem has improved, which in most cases happens.
The body is a wonderful machine.
