Five people have been trapped 200 feet underground for more than 24 hours at the Grand Canyon Caverns in Arizona after an elevator at the tourist attraction malfunctioned, authorities said Monday.
The five tourists became stranded inside the country’s largest dry caverns — where there is an underground hotel suite and restaurant — at sundown Sunday, Coconino Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jon Paxton told NBC News.
The individuals have medical conditions that prevented them from climbing 20 flights of stairs to reach above ground in Peach Springs, Paxton told Fox News.
The stairwell is similar to an old fire escape, compounding the issue of accessibility, he added.

Biden will hike down and save them.
From another article:
The malfunction was discovered about sundown Sunday, and the group was unable to use a stairway system described to be similar to an old, external fire escape, Paxton said. The caverns are equipped with a six-person hotel suite and food service, and the group was put up for the night by the hotelkeepers, he said. The suite lists for $1,000 a night for two.
Oh the horrors...
I haven't been the the Grand Canyon since they built this skywalk thing.
Hmmm....
Nice cozy spot to get stranded.
It opened March 28, 2007, by the way.

The Grand Canyon is still on my bucket list of places to take my husband. He’s never been there, and it is a sight to behold!
My wife and I went there a few years ago. There’s still a big cache of old Civil Defense food down there, so the tourists and staff will be all right for years.
I’d have to find a way to start climbing those stairs..
We were there the year before they built it. I was really bummed I didn’t get to go out on that thing.
I hate elevators. I was in a 12 story building and one day the elevator went to the 13th floor. Then it went into free fall. I got it to stop on the 4th floor.
Maybe this should be looked at, like size restrictions on getting on a amusement park ride. The good news is there is a bar and restaurant there so staying there while the elevator gets fixed should be just fine.
Good thing you had your swiss army knife with you :)
The Caverns aren’t near the actual Park. It’s almost 100 miles away on Historic Route 66. It’s been an attraction for a while under different names under private ownerships.
What a gorgeous sunrise that was! Unforgettable.
why can’t some volunteers walk down and carry them up?
I mean seriously... Take it one flight at a time, one arm over your shoulder... I would volunteer to help do that.
10 healthy strong volunteers, two helping each person...How is this national news?
So if you go visit, sabotage the elevator and you’ll get a free hotel suite.
Hah. In Asia, the fourth floor is often skipped in buildings for much the same reason the 13th is skipped here.
