Savita Halappanavar ‘would be proud of her legacy’ (Hurl alert)

Savita Halappanavar would be really proud as she has helped a lot of women, her best friend said this weekend as the tenth anniversary of her death approaches. “It should never have happened. She should be here today. We couldn’t accept it for years, we still can’t accept it really,” said Shilpa Rose Renjith at her home in Galway. Halappanavar died from severe sepsis at University Hospital Galway ten years ago this Friday after her request for an abortion was denied on legal grounds. She was 17 weeks pregnant with a baby girl and just 31 years old, with no previous medical problems.

Renjith, now 41, said Halappanavar would be “really proud” of the impact she has had on women in Ireland. “She did something to the world, something great,” she said. “I think she would be really proud, she has helped a lot of other women. She was never a person for herself. She was always about others, and that’s exactly what she did when she left us.”

Halappanavar worked as a dentist with Renjith in Galway and the pair became close friends. They got married the same year and also became pregnant at the same time. “We had almost everything the same,” Renjith said with a laugh.

She said Halappanavar always wanted a girl and had planned to name her Prasa — a combination of Savita’s own name and that of her husband Praveen. Renjith said: “She had already made plans for her daughter’s life, she had big hopes and dreams. When Mary, my daughter, was born, I felt Savita in her. I was always thinking about her.” An HSE investigation following Halappanavar’s death found there was a “lack of recognition of the gravity of the situation and of the increasing risk to the mother which led to passive approaches and delays in aggressive treatment”.

Halappanavar, who was originally from Karnataka in India, moved to Galway in 2008 to be with husband Praveen, who was working as a manufacturing engineer. Her death sparked a national outcry, with her name becoming synonymous with calls to repeal the eighth amendment until 66 per cent of the country voted to do so in 2018. A march organised by the National Women’s Council of Ireland and Rosa, the socialist feminist group, will take place in Dublin on Saturday to commemorate Halappanavar. “I think about her all the time, especially this time of the month,” said Renjith. “We celebrate Diwali, the Indian festival of light, this month and for us it’s also a special celebration for Savita. She was the one who usually organised everything, all the dance and performances. When we celebrate there’s always a missing factor, Savita is missing.” She added: “She was one of the friendliest people in the world, she would talk to everybody, she would make friends with everybody.” Halappanavar’s husband Praveen, whom she met through an arranged marriage, now lives in the US. Renjith said he had the option to move sooner with work, but Halappanavar wanted to stay in Ireland. “I still remember that,” said Renjith. “She loved it here. I really miss her.”

Her "legacy" being a complete and utter lie. That kiiling her unborn child would not have saved her life.

Those people had no business being in Ireland anyway. They have their own country where they should have stayed. No tears from me.

If Halappanavar “always wanted a girl” why was she trying to get an abortion ?
