The popular election of electors as a slate was also a stupid idea that undermined the electoral college, but by 1860 nearly everyone was doing it (the last hold out being South Carolina).
As I understand it the Electoral College was meant to function more as another College, the College of Cardinals. While that College has a mixed record, the only other mode of selecting leadership that has endured consistently on paper longer is some of the hereditary monarchies, and most of them hamore of regicide in the mix than the Cardinals due.
