Long Beach [CA] Library reopens after month-long closure due to ‘mental health’ safety issues

The library was abruptly closed on Sept. 23 and has only offered “to-go” services since then.

“The temporary closure was necessary to address security staffing levels and specialized library staff training,” the City of Long Beach said in a news release. “With Main Library being a high-volume facility in the city’s downtown core, combined with the state of mental health challenges that many are experiencing locally and throughout the country, it was apparent that in order to effectively conduct library business and provide a positive and inspiring environment for all who entered the doors, a new plan needed to be developed to meet the needs of this specific facility.”

The city said a temporary security plan has been identified and will be rolled out over the coming weeks.

The city insists its public libraries are safe places for the community.

“At times, some who visit the Library may have unresolved trauma, medical issues and mental health challenges that negatively impact other library patrons and staff. The City will continue to develop strategies to manage these isolated events for the peace of mind of all who come through our library doors,” the city said.

That library probably had a large number of “regulars,” as we call them in the library profession. We had one “regular” who insisted that she was a queen.

Whose mental health needed to take a break, the librarians?
Wonder if this is one of those libraries that hosts
Drag Queen Story Hour, and the parents are starting to push back?

Liberals think that mean you. You are the problem.

What they really mean is that mentally ill, drug addicted homeless people have been camping out at the library so to solve the problem they are closing. Just like Starbucks.

Grew up in Lakewood (Long Beach North), went to LBCC, and CSULB. Moved away in 1990.

The Gay mafia has taken over the city, and what use to be a nice place is no longer what it was.

I am going back in two weeks to visit old friends and go to the best bar in Southern California: Joe Jost

A Scooner, a Special and an egg. -- All for about $12.00

And don't forget the fresh roasted Marmion peanuts, they are the best!

I am guessing the mental health issues are in homeless who wander into the library.

I was an avid SciFi reader as a boy, and in fifth grade I wrote a book, Space Pirates.

In ninth grade, in 1963, I used the downtown LB Main Library extensively to research my term paper, "Is There Life on Other Planets?" I enjoyed using it.

During my many hours there, I made sure to explore their science fiction section: Verne, Wells, Heinlein, Bradbury....

My wife spent a good portion of her time in that town working in the mental healthcare business.

She said business was good there.
