Deepak Bhargava has a big idea: America should live up to the best parts of our national identity and become the most welcoming country on earth for immigrants and refugees. Bhargava’s Statue of Liberty Plan proposes welcoming 75 million people over the course of the next decade. To do that, and to counter broad authoritarian appeals, we need a new narrative about immigration, rooted in progressive values.
Bhargava is a distinguished lecturer in urban studies at the City University of New York and a senior fellow at the Roosevelt Institute, and his ideas come at a crucial moment. In the coming years, an existing trend will accelerate: The people who contributed the least to the climate crisis will bear the worst of its effects. According to the World Bank, by 2050 there will be 143 million climate migrants from Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia. Given the scope of our country’s historic contributions to the climate crisis, this presents an urgent question. As Bhargava asks, “If you burned your neighbor’s house down and they came to your door, knocking, asking for refuge, what’s your responsibility?”
Michael Tomasky and Felicia Wong discuss the moral imperatives behind a progressive vision for immigration and what kind of civil society movement would be necessary to see it through. Bhargava also talks about his vision and strategy for the broader progressive movement: Return to the fundamentals of organizing. Listen seriously to what people want and need. And tell a good story that makes sense. “There are millions and millions of people in this country who would participate in its renewal, who would participate in this fight if they are asked,” he says. “We can win this.”

Some nations are too stupid, lazy or ignorant to feed themselves?
Send them birth control. And lots of it.
Not any different than what neocons have been pushing since the 1980s
Sounds just like Dennis Prager who I suspect was advising no borders Bush
Visions based on falsehoods are blind.
Deepak Bhargava was born in India. That’s all I need to know about him. I wonder how many “immigrants” he hosts in his personal home. My guess is zero.
Wishing for something that is already happening.
My Plan:
All persons immigrating to this country legally or illegally, Shall be the sole financial responsibility of ALL Public Employee’s in the country. All Public Employee’s shall have their Wages and assets attached by the State they live in to pay for any and all services an immigrant uses or requires.
I had to SIGN my life away to the gubmint for 10 years guaranteeing I would be financially responsible for my Wife when I got her a Green Card the old fashioned way, LEGALLY!!!
75 million? Why stop there? Why not 475 million, or 575 million. If we’re going to commit national suicide anyway, let’s just get it over with.
Those who want open borders should just house the refugees and immigrants themselves.
I have a MUCH BETTER idea, “distinguished lecturer” Bhargava:
1. Stop ALL immigration into the US for 25 years!
2. Round up and deport every illegal alien and over-stayed visitor!
3. And, while you are at it, send EVERY Chinese student and citizen residing in the US back to China!
4. Having done that, confiscate EVERY Chinese owned property!
But wait, there is more!
5. Arrest, try and convict every single person responsible for aiding and abetting this border disaster we poor suffering American taxpayers have had to endure and pay for!
6. Convict them, imprison them and confiscate their wealth!
These are just for starters!
America First!
Sorry, but this American would like to tell you something, however I might get my ten generation of grandkids banned from FR if I post what I am thinking, so I’ll end this post with HELL NO...
🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼 you Deepak Bhargava.
Send them our trans activists.🤔
👍
It has been done in the past, and, if we REALLY want to save America, we must do it again!
