It’s fall y’all, and unless you’ve been living under a rock, the demand for pumpkin spice everything is already nearing its peak.
And since New Jersey serves both terrific autumn vibes and delicious pizza, why not combine the two?
“Uh, what?” is a fair response. But the popular pizza restaurant Talula’s in Asbury Park has doubled down on the overarching fall aesthetic. Their new pie, crudely called a basic b---- pizza, takes their classic Neapolitan-style dough and tops it with smoked mozzarella, ricotta, kabocha (squash), caramelized onion and pumpkin spice candied bacon. The spicy notes of pumpkin spice are peppered throughout the gooey cheese.
“We like to have fun with our pies and come up with quirky flavor combos that our guests may not have tried or seen before on pizzas,” said Shanti Mignogna, owner of Talula’s. “They typically start with a pairing idea, nostalgic dish, or a seasonal ingredient that we want to highlight, then we build from there.”
The idea started with pumpkin spiced candied bacon, pairing the classic spice with Benton’s bacon, Mignogna said.
“We also love using kabocha in lieu of pumpkin or butternut because it’s easier to prepare since we can leave the peel on, plus it’s delicious,” Mignogna said. “And from there it was a collaborative back and forth with our lead pizza cook, Mario (Ruiz), to figure out what cheese, herbs, etc. worked best.”
The basic b---- pizza has been Talula’s’ top-selling seasonal pie since it was first put on the menu at the end of September. Now, the pizza will be making an annual appearance every fall, Mignogna says.

Is nothing off limits? Someone should be shot for this.
You know pumpkin pineapple is the next outrage!!
Is that Ricotta I see? I’ve been putting that on my pizzas for decades. Try it. (Minus the pumpkin spice methinks)

NO!
A local auto repair shop is offering pumpkin spice oil changes.
This isn’t even pumkpin, it’s just flavoring. I think pumpkin is actually good in savory foods. Try kadu in Afghani food.
Can’t argue with progress!
Yum! This sounds AMAZING!
Disgusting. It even looks like something unspeakable.
