The old adage…”time is money” also applies. The recent experience of the guy spending 15 hours driving his EV on a 178 mile trip in Wyoming is a good example. Imagine if this guy’s job were in sales. How many customers could he see in a day? Consider an EV delivering crucial medical supplies. Would anyone trust the safety of their life or property if emergency services were dispatched in EVs?

Between June 2009 and Sept 2014 I made multiple trips between Pocatello and San Diego. On an ideal day with light traffic, I could complete the 925 mile trip in 14 hours. A worst case with a snow blocked Cajon pass ran 23 hours. Gas stops at Nephi (I-15 MP 222), St George (I-15 MP 8), Primm (I-15 MP 1), Barstow (I-15 Lenwood Dr) then on to San Diego. The stops were only for fuel/restroom. I carried protein bars and cold drinks to cover food needs. I made that run in a 1994 Saturn SL2, 2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid, 1999 F150 (5.4L V8) and Harley Fat Bob. I was able to maintain the schedule in the "cages". I took a sleep break at Mesquite, NV on the bike because I started the trip at 5:30 PM in San Diego after a long work day. The Fat Bob averaged 49.5 MPG over the 1850 mile round trip.

An EV can't make the trip in similar wall clock time. There will be additional stops for sleep/charging/eating. The addition time costs real money. In my case that would have meant burning Paid Time Off.
