I remember a novel I read back in the 90s call “The Ten Thousand” by Harold Coyle. (sidenote - Harold Coyle is a former Army Armor officer who has been compared to Tom Clancy, and he wrote a fictional novel called “Team Yankee” about company level tank warfare in Europe during WWIII)

Anyway, the plot of “The Ten Thousand” starts when a joint Russian-American SPECOPS force go into the Ukraine to seize nukes that were left behind when the Soviets left.

The nukes are taken and moved through Germany. The German PM (a hard-core nationalist) finds out and seizes the nukes and declares Germany a nuclear power and orders the US out. He then orders the German military to attack US forces.

Pretty good military read.
