These huge fish are common off CA coast.

Called Sunfish bc they are commonly observed floating flat, a few inches from the surface.

Very likely accidental boat collision.

Saw a few when I worked on an albacore boat out of San Pedro. Sometimes they jump out of the water and make a pretty big splash. They are also known as mola mola.
