How the giant bar formed, how it remains, and how it affects star formation remains an active topic of research.
I read somewhere (I don't remember where so don't take this as gospel) that spiral galaxies alternate between barred and non-barred over time. Just like elliptical galaxies alternate between prolate and spherical over time, but in different 90 degree directions.
