Hannity was never better than his days doing the overnight time slot on NYC radio in the 1990s. The pace is slower, the drive for ratings isn’t as intense, and an ambitious host is looking to move up in the industry.

By the time he got to Fox News he had long ago sold out to his employers’ political agendas and their advertisers.

As one great former NYC talk radio host once told me in a private conversation in the late 1990s … “I lost interest in this business when they had an unemployed construction worker in the prized afternoon drive slot on WABC radio.” I still crack up when I hear Sean Hannity described that way. LOL.

Michael Savage, is another one. His show was much better before it was syndicated, when it was just local. He would talk about Shakespeare, the bible, ethnobiology, Italian recipes, all kinds of witty things. I don’t think he did much of that at all when he went national, but that was some of his best stuff.
