Manson, she warned.
SNIP
One such tidbit takes us back to the Hollywood Hills of the 1960s, when Charles Manson was recruiting kids of the famous and well-to-do into what would become his infamous murder cult. Manson wooed, or attempted to woo, the likes of Terry Melcher, the son of Doris Day, Deana Martin, daughter of Dean Martin, and Lansbury's kids, Anthony and Deidre Shaw.
Dame Lansbury recounted how Diedre in particular fell under Manson's sway and how she plucked both her kids out of Hollywood and absconded to Ireland in a 2014 interview with Mail Online.
"It started with cannabis but moved on to heroin. There were factions up in the hills above Malibu that were dedicated to deadly pursuits," Lansbury told the Mail. "It pains me to say it but, at one stage, Deidre was in with a crowd led by Charles Manson. She was one of many youngsters who knew him — and they were fascinated. He was an extraordinary character, charismatic in many ways, no question about it." Deidre was apparently helping to financially support the Manson family and in 1968, Lansbury and her husband Peter Shaw discovered her drug use and cut off her credit cards. But to truly escape the pull of Manson and the counterculture, the Gaslight actress put her career on hold, picked up her family, and moved completely out of the country.

Wow, never heard that before. Good on her.
Yikes.
I had heard about her moving her children to Ireland to get away from the drugs, but not about the Manson connection.
Smart lady, they were paying attention and took action. They did well.
Absconded isn’t the right word.
I thought DiCaprio and Pitt torched and fed to the dogs the Manson family’s hit squad that night.
Interesting story.
Read later.
Nice spin trying to make her sound like a good parent.
However, if your kid joins the Manson cult, you probably dropped the ball. Also, it takes pretty good connections to keep it out of the news.
Smart parents
Whaaaat?
Well done.
It was crazy times. She protected her child from disaster. That makes a good mom….no matter what you think
You didn’t have to be a bad or neglectful parent to lose a child to a cult back in the day. I had a cousin who was attracted to the Moonies and joined them. He was a good kid, but naive and idealistic. They had him for a few years until he worked his way up in the organization to where he saw how the money was really being spent.
“You didn’t have to be a bad or neglectful parent to lose a child to a cult back in the day.”
I can see your point. But cults exist because people get something they aren’t getting at home. That’s the direct pipeline. Moonies used “love bombing” techniques which infers a lack of something important at home. Neglect can take many forms.
I was lucky. My conservative parents didn’t dropped the ball. But they won’t get the praise that Lansbury’s “parenting” gets here for some reason.
“Wow” was exactly my response too. Two names I never expected to see in the same sentence.
That’s a good story about Angela...who I once thought was a great person and actress, but she became a devoted LEFTIE, and I find that hard to accept.
Unfortunately, she didn’t become one, he inherited it. Her grandfather was the leader of the Labour party when she was a girl, and he was a socialist. She never really had a chance as far as that goes.
I should have said as well her father was a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, but he died when she was only nine.
