An elk hunter got more than he bargained for last Saturday, October 9 when a mature mountain lion approached and charged him. The incident occurred during an early-season rifle hunt in southeast Idaho. In a remarkable video captured by the hunter on his cell phone and later shared by the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), John C. Erickson yells "get back" at the advancing mountain lion before firing multiple rounds from his .40 caliber Glock 27. His bullets appear to hit just inches above the predator's head and back.

“He should have shot way earlier a few feet in front of the cat to spray rocks and dirt at it. The rocks and the noise would probably have ended the encounter.”
Exactly right. They need both audio and physical for their brain to make a connection. Because hunting predators has been discouraged or outlawed there are now generations of predators that have never been shot at. Unless they are hit or sprayed they don’t make the connection or understand the audio is something they need to fear. I have seen coyotes and cats just stand there completely clueless without any fear at all while being shot at. They are just not smart enough to know that a shot equals something physical coming at them.
Yep... See #61
He would have been better off throwing rocks, at least the cat would have seen the rocks flying towards it. lol
A couple of my friends in Oregon who hunt elk use the .338 Lapua.
Some others I know use a 7mm Rem Mag. Me, personally? I’m a .30-06 guy (though I’ve never hunted elk).
“Who hunts big game in Idaho with a Glock as a backup piece?”
When I used to hunt out West my back-up sidearm was a .357 magnum.
My bullets would have been in its brain. 😉
Stirrup hose should be mandatory-one dude has soccer socks on and that other gee gaw has his pant legs pulled down to his shoe tops
Yep. You have to suck it up and they know you’ll kill them in a heartbeat - 9 times out of 10, they’ll abandon their aggressive position
“Yeah, go out in the brush here in Texas, where you can encounter enormous feral hogs that basically appear from nowhere at very close range, even if you’re actually hunting someone else.”
Well, I HAVE hunted wild pigs in Texas, as well as javelinas. And I used a 1903 Springfield .30-06, which, as you know, is a bolt-action rifle. Of course, that was more than fifty years ago.
Your .30-06 is a fine elk rifle - probably the most popular rifle in elk country.
“Your .30-06 is a fine elk rifle - probably the most popular rifle in elk country.”
But, alas, I never hunted elk.
LOL
I’ve Justin Bieber music but yeah, Taylor Swift otta do the trick, though I think it may kill other wildlife in the area unnecessarily...
Lol That’s right.
“Okay Barney, I’ll keep him focused on me and you come up from behind”.
I’ve seen two mountain lions and each time they were gone in seconds.
Never retreat from an apex predator. Retreating identifies you as prey. You don’t want that.
There are *way* more of them in Texas now. It’s not unheard of to get surprised by more than one simultaneously.
Pig roast.
Sure. Tell me again how your old thuty-ought-six can take on more than 12 hogs at once?
My FAL holds 20 and reloads very fast. I’ve seen herds of the things well over 20. They’re all over the place like roaches in a bad Mexican restaurant.
“Sure. Tell me again how your old thuty-ought-six can take on more than 12 hogs at once?”
Did I ever make such a claim? No, of course I didn’t. You must have me confused with someone else.
