The Bennard family from Shelby County, Tennessee, suffered a devastating blow Oct. 6 when their two dogs fatally attacked the family’s 2-year-old and 5-month-old.
The dogs, two pit bulls named Cheech and Mia, turned on Hollace Dean, 5 months old, and Lilly Jane, 2, for no discernable reason.
Mom Kirstie Jane Bennard, 30, gave her all to protect her children, using herself as a shield to try to protect Lilly Jane and receiving countless lacerations in the process, according to USA Today.
Despite her sacrifice and efforts during the horrific 10-minute onslaught, the Bennards lost both their precious babies and Kirstie was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The two dogs had been with the family for eight years and had never shown any signs of aggression, according to the report.
Friends and family have been shocked by the incident, saying the dogs had never given any sign they’d be capable of such an atrocity (though many people have said being a pit bull is sign enough).
“I can promise you those children were her world, and if there was any inkling of danger, she would have never had those dogs near her kids,” Kelsey Canfield, Kirstie’s best friend, told Fox News.
“Those children were everything to them, and they just have a really long journey ahead.”
The dogs were euthanized on Thursday, according to a tweet by the Shelby County Sheriff.
“As of now it looks like there isn’t any permanent damage other than a heart that will never heal.

And that mother must relive that incident on daily basis.
I’m sure she’ll never forget the screams of her babies as the dogs were killing them.
“So what happened the first time one of your “sweet” dog gets aggressive with other people or other dogs and your dog park?”
First off, you used the past tense, “happened,” which implies that it did, in fact, happen; when, in fact, it never has. But, if it ever DID happen, and the aggression was unprovoked, then I would take care of it, and I’d no longer have that dog.
“I think you shouldn’t be defensive about your dogs...”
Then don’t advocate violence against them. I am old school; I will stand up for “me and mine.”
“I think you should lock them up if you’re gonna keep them. Don’t let them be around other people or dogs ever.”
I hope you never have a pet, of ANY kind, if that is your mindset.
“Otherwise referred to as a White lie. White = good.”
Such explanations were common back in those days.
It was done to protect children and youthful innocence. I guess we can forget about that nowadays.
“You’re the geriatric **** that was alive when pet rocks were around. Bye Boomer.”
Not only are you BSL (proponent of Breed Specific Legislation), but you’re an agist bigot, as well.
You must have your hands full in Florida, what with all the retirees there.
“It was done to protect children and youthful innocence.”
Of course it was.
“I guess we can forget about that nowadays.”
Which, to me, is tragic. Let little kids enjoy the innocence of their age; reality will show up soon enough.
He won’t have to.
It’s only a matter of time that you will be forced to...
“He won’t have to. It’s only a matter of time that you will be forced to...”
By whom? You?
I don’t live in Florida genius.
If it bites my kid, yes I will.
I have.
I have also had to stop a GSD off lease from running down a 10 year old girl. Thank God his owner was able to stop him before I got seriously injured.
It is like owning a tiger. I don’t care, but if it come after me or mine it is dead and I am not sorry.
Dad did not lie to us.
Had to kill my best dog because he roamed, and you can NOT allow that while raising livestock.
We both cried for a while.
But farm kids tend to be different.
Ya know, I bet the parents of those two children had the exact same attitude as you.
See where that got them?
People with children shouldn’t play pitbull lottery.
You have good dogs.
I was talking about purposeful play with the dogs.
I feel bad for pit bulls left at shelters, but humans have destroyed what there was of the breed.
being stupid is like being dead, you don't know it but everything is else does.
Another brilliant post EE!
Dog lovers who think pits are fine are complete fools.
It’s as if they are all death possessed.
Thank you. If they snap, they possess too much strength for 95% of people to deal with.
No reason for Pit Bulls to exist.
Maybe the loaded gun could turn a pit bull into a paper weight preemptively.
Happened to a friend of mine’s kid, although he got lucky and only lost an eye.
