his passport was good enough to leave here, be admitted to England and to play but not good enough to travel home.

Since he was British, he probably didn't have any issues going home. I'm thinking a visa issue instead of a passport issue, but it could be that the passport is expiring before his anticipated departure date from the US and needs to be renewed.
