NBA only has itself to blame for sad decline into incivility
NY Post ^ | October 8, 2022 | Phil Mushnick

As the NBA scene grows more uncivil — last week, Warriors star and repetitive reprobate Draymond Green put on a vulgar public show following his assault of a teammate — commissioner Adam Silver continues to whistle past the dump.

Silver seems unwilling to firmly or even tangentially deal with what’s increasingly plaguing the NBA.

Brings to mind Silver’s mentor, the late NBA commissioner David Stern, who, during an interview with NBC’s Bob Costas, scoffed at the notion that taunting and trash-talking inspire too many on-court fights.

The next season, the NBA added anti-taunting rules to reduce the number of on-court fights.

Over the past, oh, 10 years, readers — too many to ignore — have let it be known they no longer hold an interest in the NBA, no longer even check the standings, as it has become a harbor for selfish, profane players, disruptive in-house audiences, sense-depriving, pounding piped-in “music,” and games reduced to basketball-barren 3-point barrages.

And TV-dictated late weeknight NBA Finals have become far too easy to ignore for those who once watched as conditioned. People aren’t going to lose any sleep missing the NBA Finals.

The highest TV ratings for an NBA finals was back in 1998. That was nearly 25 years ago.

I had already lost interest in basket ball by then.

I occasionally might watch a few minutes of a game when visiting friends or relatives.

I really don’t have a clue who any of the players are or team standings and can’t carry on a relevant conversation on the subject of pro or college basket ball.

It really holds no interest for me.

Yep. Also skews toward younger audiences.

There is definitely talk of that. Mexico City might have one at some point too, for example. And they of course already have Toronto.

Hey, most of the survivors among us may well be headed toward that status as well.

What NBA player with even a tenth of a brain is going to want to play in Mexico City?

I think we should see a true World Championship series with the North American champion vs the European Champion.

If you’ve never seen a Euro League game, the crowds there are nuts, it’s basically soccer crowds in an indoor setting.

Interesting. Do the NBA and Euro League use the same rules?

Yeah, there’s inflation, but still the NBA’s global revenue crossed the $10B level for the first time last year:

The NFL still takes in nearly twice as much in total global revenue, however.

They need to implement character counts

https://charactercounts.org/

I just took a short review but didn’t see political correctness or wokeness at the site.

They haven’t gone to the darkside?

I got back into the Premier League this year because of Erling Haaland, that guy is going to dominate soccer for the next 10 years.

That’s a challenge, but they’re dipping their toe in with a G-League team playing there this season.

Between 1998 the NBA finals declined from nearly 30 million viewers to about 15 million in 2022.

Let’s keep in mind that the U.S. population has grown from about 275 million to more than 330 million in that same time period.

It would seem that pro basketball is barely even an American sport anymore.

The NBA just ended a 6-year experiment with a US vs. the world format for their rookie/sophomore All-Star game.

But that gives you an idea of how international their talent has become.
