The 1935 Hurricane was a disaster of incredible magnitude. It had sustained winds of 185 mph and a storm surge of 18' to 20'. To this day it's referred to as the Great Hurricane.

It's surreal that so many natural disasters occur at night, and this Florida hurricane was no exception.

It's impossible to try and imagine the extent of terror one feels when a storm rips and tears at everything around you.

The rain, the wind, and the darkness pummeling and shrouding you. Debris flying, filthy water surging around and over you.

Buildings being torn apart. The desperate screams of people and animals fighting to stay alive.

You can't see, because all of this is happening in the dark around you.

Hurrican Ian wasn't nearly as deadly as some earlier storms. The Lake Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928 killed more than 2,000 people. Carson Robison sang about it in his 1928 hit "The Porto Rico Storm." In 1926, a hurricane made a direct hit on Miami, killing more than 800 people and contributing to the collapse of the Florida land boom of the 1920's. This one also inspired a couple of tunes.

The Storm that Struck Miami--Fiddlin' John Carson (1934)

It isn't so much how many were killed, it was the enourmity of the Galveston hurricane. It made its way through the eastern-central USA and even caused major destruction in Canada.

Now imagine that in today's world -- the climate change crowd would have had a field day.

A lot of people associate Hurricane Camille with the Gulf, but the flooding from it killed over 100 in Virginia.

There’s a very solemn monument in Islamorada for those who died then. If you’re driving down the Keys, it’s a worthwhile stop.

““just put your lips together and blow”
Is that what you do to limp dick and brain, Joe Biden?”

it’s a quite famous quote from “Key Largo”,
but you wouldn’t know that would you?
