The Gender Reassignment Controversy (Old but interesting article)
Psychology Today ^ | Nigel Barber Ph.D.

Posted on 10/06/2022 3:42:44 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

Why do people (predominantly men) seek surgical reassignment (as a woman)? [...]

In one category fall homosexual men who are morally uncomfortable about their orientation and see reassignment as a way of solving the problem. If they are actually women, sexual interactions with men get redefined as heterosexual.

McHugh argued that many of the others seeking reassignment are cross-dressers. These are heterosexual men who derive sexual pleasure from wearing women's clothing. According to McHugh, surgery is the logical extreme of identifying with a female identity through cross-dressing.

If his thesis is correct, McHugh denies that reassignment surgery is ever either medically necessary or ethically defensible. He feels that the surgeon is merely cooperating with delusional thinking. It is analogous to providing liposuction treatment for an anorexic who is extremely slender but believes themselves to be overweight.

Adult Reassignment Results

Anecdotally, the first hurdle for reassignment is how the result is perceived by others. This problem is familiar to anyone who looked at Dustin Hoffman's depiction of a woman (Tootsie). Diligent as the actor was in his preparation, his character looked masculine.

For male-to-female transsexuals, the toughest audience to convince is women. As McHugh reported, one of his female colleagues said: “Gals know gals, and that's a guy.”

According to McHugh, although transsexuals did not regret their surgery, there were little or no psychological benefits:

“They had much the same problems with relationships, work, and emotions, as before. The hope that they would emerge now from their emotional difficulties to flourish psychologically had not been fulfilled (2)”.

Thanks to McHugh's influence, gender reassignment surgeries were halted at Johns Hopkins. The surgeries were resumed, however, and are now carried out in many hospitals here and around the world.

Yes, but this post-er was very clear that this was an old article, so I didn’t want to mention the bad actors.

There are gay people speaking out against the trans affirmation train wreck, especially with respect to children. This is much bigger than the activism for gay inclusion, and from what I've read, quite a few resent how the 'T' has been added to 'their movement'. We have many children in our community who have been influenced in the trans direction in the past few years. It is really quite alarming in the numbers, and there is a LOT of money pushing this agenda.

From what I've read, one of the issues the gay community has with the push toward trans affirmation is that it ultimately destroys gay people. Some of those who would ultimately come out as gay instead mutilate themselves in this fashion. The other objection is that this constant agitation for trans affirmation threatens gay inclusion itself. Apart from a small percentage of activists, most gay people in my experience and from my reading, just want to live in peace in their own fashion (as adults). By screaming at everyone and mutilating children, the trans movement creates a backlash that also discredits their simpler goals of living in partnership with whom they chose.

While I don't support gay grooming of children any more than trans grooming, I can support letting consenting adults live in peace with whatever domestic partner they chose. Whatever I personally may think of that lifestyle or whatever my religious stance in that regard, I don't think it's my place to interfere. Trans children are another matter altogether. I have a good friend whose teen girl has declared that she is a boy. It is a heartbreaking journey for parents.

And yes, I'm aware that much of the money behind the Trans movement comes from rich and powerful gay men. There is a strong element of misogyny in the trans movement. I think there's a special place in hades for those who are funding this hideous movement and trapping innocent children. Planned Parenthood, by the way, is a major supplier of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to young people with few if any questions asked. This is part of the horrific picture.

My acceptance of gay people is of the variety that they have always been among us and I don't support making pariahs of them as long as they don't victimize anyone.

The reason I didn't post the date was because I was still caffeine deprived due to the early time. In other word, I simply overlooked it by mistake.

The only agenda I have, in this particular case, is to expose the evil being inflicted on children in the name of gender dysphoria.

In fact, Notthemomma, what possible agenda could a Freeper have re: this matter?

In an upside-down world mentally healthy people are conditioned/coerced/cancelled/bullied/forced to rewire their thoughts to believe truly mentally sick are to be idolized as the avant-guarde.

Are we there yet?

I have a good friend whose teen girl has declared that she is a boy.

I hope this teen girl doesn't get any surgery. She might grow up to learn she was only a tomboy and not a boy at all.

We are there. But, in this case, it is mentally ill (perverted sexually) who are taking advantage of the Left's "diversity, equity, and inclusion" movement to spread their mental illness.

And, of course, the Left is enabling this contagion because virtue signaling makes them feels so, well, virtuous.
