No, the high death tolls are due to the nws being wrong. They forecasted the storm hitting a couple of hundred miles further north and didn’t correct the forecast until it was too late for people to get out.

Which is nothing they had any control over. The weather will do what it going to do.

This is far from the first time a storm took an unexpected turn.

People presuming they are safe or that it won’t be so bad is the issue. That’s why there is the cone of uncertainty.

For some people to get out. Most people who live on the barrier islands did evacuate. It is a sad situation for all involved and a tragic situation for those who lost their lives and for their loved ones.
