Loretta Lynn has passed at age 90.
I don’t know when country became more popular nationwide.
I do recall, living in Chicago in the early 1980s, that WMAQ was a major country music radio station. So at least by then, country music was popular in some big cities.
The only real skip I listened to was WKBW in Buffalo (Rock/Top 40). Although during BCT and AIT at Fort Knox I could pick up WBZ in Boston. And IIRC I also picked up WBZ in Florida as well.

If you are able to enjoy Sirius XM Radio, try Willie’s Roadhouse...best country music ever played and especially love Saturday night from the Grand Ol’ Opry, replayed Sunday nights. You’ll hear a lot of Loretta, Patsy, and Tammy! Also, Ms. Jeannie Seely who is wonderful!
I still remember when Ode To Billy Joe hit the airwaves in ‘67. Apart from a few crossover hits I was familiar with it was the first “Country” song I knew. An amazing song to this day.

Bobbie Gentry’s voice was like smoked honey butter, and mesmerizing to me.
When I started dating the man who became my husband, I didn’t know anything about country music and had never listened to any of it. That was all he had ever heard. I liked him, alot, and wanted to like what he liked. So while he was away at college during the week, I listened to country music as much as possible to learn songs, and the names of the people doing the singing.

A very interesting description...is that a Southern thing? The only real contact with "the South" I've ever had was BCT at Fort Knox many years ago.Most of the guys in my company were from Tennessee,Mississippi and Texas...and my one,and only,experience with "grits" was in the mess hall. The Southerners were great...the grits,not so much!

LOL! My dad would sometimes make grits for breakfast. Never much liked them then but have developed an occasional yearning for them. Put butter and salt on your grits and they taste just like... butter and salt!
Back in the day before Satellite Radio there was 820 WBAP in Fort Worth to keep the truckers up during the night.

They still run the Red-Eye-Radio show out of WBAP.

As I suggested there are country songs that I really like...but not too many.I suppose that if I was to listen to a “classic Country” station for any length of time I’d find others I like.But I suspect that one needs to be a Southerner to enjoy it thoroughly. But I could be wrong on that.
