We won the big one, which was the point: the Cold war. The Soviet Union no longer exists.

IMHO we pulled too many punches and greatly overestimated the strength of the Soviet Union.

There isn't going to be any world war because neither NATO nor an independent Ukraine are fundamental threats to Russia's existence and they know it: they lived with an independent Ukraine for more than 20 years.

Russian/Soviet chest beating is a historical tradition simply to see how much they can get away with. It didn't work during the Cold War and I see even less reason to give in now. If you want negotiations, here's a starter: Russia withdraws to its Feb 23 lines.

I’m perfectly capable of recognizing that the junta in DC is attempting to install a one-party corporate-fascist state while also recognizing that Putin is trying to do the same in Ukraine using direct force and that a victory for him would have disastrous consequences for the US.

Agree. It seems some conservatives have forgotten how to multi task.

MAGA Republicans should not ignore the massive support Putin’s Russia gets from Soros HQ EU and Biden partnering with Putin to nuke up Iran. Putinist Russia is no friend of the US. Never has been. Never will be.

That is for sure! There are 350 active silos in that region. Those are very hard targets, so they would be hit by big warheads. I’m not sure how this works given the “use them or lose them” doctrine. There would be a twenty minute warning, which is plenty of time to launch. It is not clear to me that they would be targeted. The Russians have very extensive sheltering facilities for their population. Our leaders have provided this only for themselves.

We won the cold war yet Russia is threatening nuclear war. If it happens then we DIDNT win anything. Do you see nuclear war is an all round loser ? Or not?

Oh you don’t see the impending economic and energy collapse due to sanctions? They lived with Ukraine inon their border so long as we stayed out . The moment America interfered in 2014 Russia refused to live with it. We set the stage for war. W then used sanctions that will provoke war. We then almost certainly took out pipelines that will start WW III.

Even if not, do you get that energy and economic collapse is coming? The Ukraine issue is BS. They could be rounded up and slaughtered and the coming energy collapse is STILL more important.

Do you get what acting in the West’s and not Ukraine’s interest mean? Ukraine could vanish from the earth and it still would be ok so long as we survive. This is survival. Do you get that?

I take it you have never been to that region of the country. There are no hills. It is as flat as the middle of a dinner plate. Twenty miles away from one silo places to twenty miles closer to the next one.

It seems some conservatives have forgotten how to set priorities.

This is survival. Do you get that?

No, it isn't. There isn't going to be any economic collapse. A severe downturn, but that's it. Average Americans will be considerably poorer, but we won't have mass starvation or even another Great Depression. We still produce most of the oil we need, and a huge food surplus. One of the primary health problems for Americans is obesity.

Russia and all of its production could evaporate from the face of the planet and it would be the equivalent of Italy disappearing.

This downturn is being exacerbated by the Russia sanctions, but not caused by them. The primary causes of the downturn are the lockdowns inflicted by governments in COVID panic and the subsequent tidal waves of liquidity which must now be mopped up. Because our government is bought and paid for, most of that mopping up will take place by removing money from your wallet and mine.

Another important factor is the "green" strangulation of the economy. I hope now that people are getting a taste of the "green" economy, they'll finally spit it back out.

I've lived through a number of wars, economic downturns and nuclear bloviating by the Soviet Union and Russia. I don't see any reason to think this time will be much different.

There are people buying those old silos and doing just that. It seems kind of neat to me; but, I’ve always been a bit of a cave man.

And what if the Russians are using a 30 year old target lists?

A point to ponder.

You’re joking right? You know that the globe is so short of fertilizer that mass starvation is coming ? You know that The Administration is putting in place measures to massively cut food production, economic production and energy usage? That nothing like this has ever been done in the history of mankind ?

This is DELIBERATE starvation and economic collapse, nothing like your previous experience. With all due respect, you have a serious failure of imagination, unable to see that the future could be different from what you have experienced in the past. Are you seriously justifying food shortages by saying obesity is a problem? This is mind boggling. People are overweight so let’s starve them. Can you hear yourself? This isn’t even reasoning it’s just plain sticking your fingers in your ears and refusing to listen to reason.

It’s not a question of Russia’s GDP. It’s a question of physical reality - without Russian fertilizer the planet cannot produce enough food to feed 8 billion folks. It’s a question of biology not GDP. The vaunted American food surplus could disappear in a single growing season.

Now back to the Ukraine issue. Regardless of whether we have economic armageddon or not - bottom line, Ukraine is not an American interest. It’s not a Westen interest. It’s of no interest to anyone except themselves and Russia. America needs to keep its nose out and deal with internal issues that will destroy the country in a generation if not solved.

Nuclear submarines “THEY GOT BUILT UNDER ME” is an absolute lie: https://www.vice.com/en/article/aepy7b/trump-wants-more-nuclear-attack-subs-but-theres-no-one-to-build-them

Trump did indeed want to build more, but our only 2 sub building shipyards were already fully committed to other projects. The article went on to explain that we have 52 nuclear attack subs, 12 more than all other navies combined (in 2017). President Trump sensibly went on to explore other options. Russia has engaged in producing a variety of nuclear weapons from smaller to large bombs as well as tactical ones. So apparently Trump moved forward with this in mind and can take full credit for the following:

https://www.defensenews.com/smr/nuclear-arsenal/2020/02/04/trumps-new-nuclear-weapon-has-been-deployed/

This article goes into detail about making our nuclear capability be comparable to that of other countries. The nuclear weapon launched is smaller than the Hiroshima bomb.
Here is one important concern of those concerned about this idea: Specific to the W76-2, members of the nonproliferation community have raised concerns that having a low-yield and high-yield warhead launched on the same submarine-launched missile creates a situation where an adversary doesn’t know which system is being used and therefore reacts as if the larger warhead has been launched. I wonder if this concern has been addressed since the Feb. 2020 initial launch. It could have been neglected given the immediate outbreak of the Covid emergency.
