Panic at an Indonesian soccer match after police fired tear gas to stop brawls left 129 dead, mostly trampled to death, police said Sunday.

Several fights between supporters of the two rival soccer teams were reported inside the Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java province's Malang city after the Indonesian Premier League game ended with Persebaya Surabaya beating Arema Malang 3-2.

The sport isn’t the problem. The fanatics are.

Every country has its football hooligans. Toss in a koran or a few yo mammas and it’s a war.

Absolutely correct. And if it’s not the Koran fueling violence, it’s alcohol.

I once attended a college football game between Pittsburgh and West Virginia. It was held in Morgantown, and Pittsburgh won. As I left the stadium, my (stupid) companion loudly announced that we were Pittsburgh fans. Only my clever banter saved us from being assaulted by the many drunk WVU fans.

Such stories are of course not uncommon.

Instead of firing tear gas into the crowd, just rope off a couple areas for the idiots to beat each others brains out.

This is the result of the police using nonlethal rounds. Had a sniper just shot the brawling parties, the death toll might have been 5 or 10.
