Rescuers were called around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to Tahquitz Rock near Idyllwild following a distress call, the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department said on Twitter.
A team managed to climb into the steep, remote area and found both the climbers dead at the scene, the department said.
While one climber remains unidentified, multiple reports and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department have identified the other climber as Long Beach firefighter and former NFL player Gavin Escobar.

Pretty as hell there. Americans need to take it back!
What, do you think those guys were Russians?
“What, do you think those guys were Russians?”
Worse - people from south of the border.
Long Beach is in L.A. county. In California. It’s between San Pedro and Huntington Beach. You should come out and visit. You can stay at the Queen Mary Hotel. It’s fun.
Thanks, let me check that my passport hasn’t expired. I may want to visit!
Passport?
What in the world are you talking about?
Gavin played for the Dallas Cowboys and other NFL teams, retiring in 2018. I believe that he became a firefighter with the Long Beach FD.
The other climber killed was believed to be his girlfriend, Chelsey Walsh.
Actually the Queen Mary is closed and undergoing extensive repairs. The last company that managed it went bankrupt and left it virtually uninhabitable. Last time I was over that way about 2 weeks ago, I stopped by and spoke to the construction superintendent. He said he he had divers in the water currently patching leaks in the hull, pumping out water and sewage and preparing to do a complete MEP upgrade. It will be a few more years before it reopens.
Oh no, I remember Gavin.
It is. indeed. You can also tour a Soviet submarine as well, berthed next to the QM.
That’s a shame. Stayed there about twenty years ago. Beautiful ship.
Oops! Bad news.
I have lived on this mountain since 1989. It is nothing like the rest of SoCal.
We shifted to camping at Lake Elsinore and eventually stopped camping at all. The last trip to Elsinore was spoiled by a campsite full of red ants and no alternatives. Fortunately, the drive up from Chula Vista was easily retraced home.
The other favorite peak for my scout troop was San Gorgonio. I've been to the top of Gorgonio twice and San Jacinto on 5 separate trips.
Well, he IS Russian so…

Two climbers from Los Angeles fell 200 feet (60 meters) to their deaths on the rock in 2000, according to the L.A. Times.
Is it inferred then that the casualties are from a rock climbing accident? The ambiguous nature of the wording forces one to ask, is there something being deliberately covered up?
When I started dating my wife I took her to Ports ‘O Call Village, in 1973. We went back several times, for the memories.
Rock climbing is a stupid sport, and people who do it are stupid too, and have a death wish. In my humble opinion. What a stupid thing to die for - climbing a stupid rock.
