Charles Walker, 52, was last seen on Pompano Beach around 5 p.m. on Sept. 23, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Walker’s family said he was planning on jet skiing from the beach to Bimini in the Bahamas, a distance of around 115 miles.

While in the water, Walker’s last known location was 15 nautical miles off the coast of West Palm Beach, per the Coast Guard.

“What is the range on one of those. Seems like 115 miles is pushing it.”

Wonder if it overheated and seized up?

Don’t think those things are meant to go full throttle that long. IMHO.

115 miles @ 20 mph = ~6 hours on the water. 15 gallon tank burning 4 gallons per hour = ~3-1/2 hours so maybe you strap on three more 5 gallon tanks because, well, you’re Florida Man. But you don’t count on the chop and the massive current in the Gulf Stream and you run out about 60% of the way there.

Pretty crappy way to go. You are out of fuel but the craft is fully boyant.

A personal locating beacon might save him if he had one.

How far can they go before needing fuel? Wasn’t Ian in the area at that time? Even without Ian, plenty of other reasons not to do that.

That’s possible for sure. Definitely a low probability of success.

That’s not quite as dumb as the guy that tied weather balloons to his lawn chair and went up until he started getting cold, then started popping the balloons with a bb gun to come back down. But then, that guy survived....

All you would need is a compass

And a spare engine.

#28: "the guy that tied weather balloons to his lawn chair and went up …"

That's an amazing story. Really it is incredibly brave. But foolhardy. That story will still be retold 100 years from now.

He should have just hopped the Bullet Train to the Bahamas.

It’s only about 50 miles to Bimini and people ride Jet Ski’s over there fairly regularly. The difference is they usually do it as part of a flotilla with one or more chase boats, and only in really good weather and sea conditions. Doing it alone is kind of inviting Darwin to work his magic.
