At 4.4 Miles, Wyoming Team Sets New Rifle Shot World Record
Cowboy State Daily ^ | 9-20-22 | Mark Heinz

Posted on 09/29/2022 1:07:52 PM PDT by smokingfrog

From the pull of the trigger, roughly 24 seconds elapsed before forward spotters heard the telltale plunk of a 422-grain copper bullet piercing the thin metal target.

The shooter was 4.4 miles away, a distance so great, the Earth’s rotation came into play.

It was a new world record for a rifle shot, set by the Jackson-based Nomad Rifleman team led by Schott Austin and Shepard Humphries. The shot was made with a custom-built rifle chambered for the .416 Barrett cartridge.

During a Zoom interview Tuesday with Cowboy State Daily, Humphries declined to identify the team member who made the shot.

It beat the team’s previous Wyoming state record of 3.06 miles. It also broke the previous world record shot of 4 miles set in 2020 by Paul Phillips of Texas.

The Wyoming team “had easier conditions” than Phillips because of the thin air at about 7,000 feet in elevation near Pinedale, where the shot was made Sept.13, Humphries said.

Still, even with the Wyoming air working in their favor, it was nothing short of miraculous for the shot, the 69th attempt that morning, to land inside an 8-inch orange bullseye. The bullseye had been painted in the center of a white, rectangular target measuring 120 inches wide and 92 inches tall.

Ok, at that range would it even penetrate denim?

“If you’re shooting along an east-west line (line of latitude)”

That is when you have to make the biggest correction. I get 34’ correction.

No, solid copper. In calibers like .416 Barrett, for long range accuracy shots they tend to use solid copper or solid brass projectiles.

Was he not calm when he radioed in about the perp being down???

Yes sir. I also appreciate way his movements were fast and orderly, without being haphazard. He stopped the car. Put down his coffee. Went to the back. Took his weapon. Prepared the weapon. Put on the flashers. Fired the weapon. All within 30 seconds. Never yelling. No wasted movement. Good training, and maybe the Holy Spirit.

Well, it did have a few “off the shelf” parts.

The rifle, with customized parts and accessories from Canada, New Zealand, Arkansas, South Dakota and elsewhere, was assembled in Idaho by S&S Sporting in Driggs, Idaho.
Rifle is chambered in .416 Barrett
Chassis is a Cadex Dual Strike from Canada
Barrel is an LRI from Sturgis, SD – 40” with a 1:9 twist. These folks are amazing in every way.
The barrel was “structured” by tacomHQ in Arkansas.
Action is a McMillian TAC50.
Trigger is a Timney.
Muzzle brake is a Terminator T6 from New Zealand.
The 350 MOA mount was custom built by S&S Sporting in Idaho.
The custom high-rise cheek piece was built by S&S Sporting.
The scope is the recently-released Vortex Razor 6-35×56 FFP scope with EBR-7D MOA reticle. This scope is the latest and greatest from Vortex Optics. After testing many other top-tier brands, Scott decided that this Razor was our best option.
The scope was held in place with a double set of Leupold Mark IV rings.
Support optics included a Delta and a Charlie TARAC from tacomHQ.
The bipod was a LRA.
Scott designed and built the shooting platform.
Ballistic software used – Applied Ballistics.

Tips on how to be a good "FReeper"

It seems to me that we are getting a lot of new members and the following may be helpful to them.

Live in a solid "red" state and when anybody complains about some asinine law in their blue state, tell them to "just move from there". The simplistic solution is always the best one. Refer to California as Californicate or Kalifornia. The people's republic of (insert state name here) is always good.

When an article appears about something negative happening in public schools, proudly proclaim that all your kids are home schooled and geniuses to boot. Extra points if you also state "Publik educashun suks" extra, extra points if you put "home school" in caps and add a few exclamination points.

Any article posted about guns being used in a crime, be sure to ask what caliber gun was used and berate the author for leaving out that very relevant fact. If the good guy shot at the bad guy and missed, tell everybody that he needs more range time. Helpful also to mention what an excellent marksman you are. Post a picture of one of your guns for extra points.

When an article about those deceptive credit card companies is posted, post a reply stating one of the following, "I don't have a credit card and never will", or "I have credit cards but pay all balances if full every month", extra points if yours is the first reply on the matter. If you can squeeze it in there, also let folks know that you don't own a television set anymore and haven't since 1967. If you can't get that in, you'll just have to wait for a thread about the MSM to post it. Don't even hint at the fact that most articles posted here are from the MSM.

A "noob" or "Newbie" is a member who has been here one day less than you have, an old timer has been here at least one day longer. Noobs opinions don't mean very much because they all started forming their political philosophies the day they signed up here.

“This effect is more pronounced at higher latitudes (that is, more northerly locations, in the CONUS).”

Estimating for Wyoming both E-W elevation correction and N-S “windage” correction would have similar magnitudes. 20-30 feet.

Disclaimer. Math performed while watching hurricane coverage and drinking wine.

Only if you’re shooting exactly east or west, any component of north or south and you’ll have difference of conferences that you have to account for, think about it.
