Albert Pujols joins 700-HR club: The best stories from those who played with and against him

Twenty-two years. Seven hundred home runs.

Albert Pujols achieved a level of greatness only three other players in the history of the game have matched when he hit No. 700 on Friday night -- his second homer of the evening at Dodger Stadium. He joins Barry Bonds, Henry Aaron and Babe Ruth as the only players in the exclusive 700-home run club.

As the St. Louis Cardinals slugger made his march for history, ESPN's Jesse Rogers, Buster Olney and Alden Gonzalez asked current and former teammates, opposing pitchers and other greats in the game to describe their favorite moments and what it has been like playing with, pitching to and simply witnessing an all-time great home run hitter during Pujols' two decades in the majors.

I know there are those here who are completely down on professional sports, but 700 home runs is quite an accomplishment as evidenced by the fact that only three other players have done it.

And AFAIK, Pujols has never been accused of juicing, nor do I know anything about his politics. He has shown himself to be among the all-time greats and congratulations to him.

The fact he hit two in a row, suggests the Dodgers pitchers were grooving big time.

Im ok with it if the pitchers were kinda giving him some good stuff to hit. He still had to hit what was thrown

Yes it’s quite an achievement. Congrats to him. He’s one of the all time greats.

Yes, many here on down on pro sports. I think it’s funny, how some of them come onto a thread such as this, and talk about how they don’t give a (blank) about sports.

We don’t have to comment on every single subject placed for discussion on Free Republic. You can simply skip over something, such as sports, which you don’t want to talk about.

If it was Clayton Kershaw or Julio Urias I would think so. But it was Andrew Heaney and Phil Bickford both who are fighting for a post season roster spot. Plus manager Dave Roberts looked upset after Bickford threw that pitch.

Aaron Judge should pass Maris pretty soon.

If pitchers were helping him, it shows he was popular. They probably didn’t help ARod, in contrast.

True. I thought Pujols was finished, he’s been impressive this year.

And I will be rooting for the Cardinals in the playoffs.

As a Cardinals fan, I am glad he came back to help make a memorable season.

Who?

I was a HUGE baseball fan in my youth.

Still have my baseball card collections from back then.

First time I ever heard of this guy.

That will show you how far MLB has chased its fans away.

My goal will be to forget this guy's name by the middle of next week.

I work diligently every year to be ignorant of the names of the two teams in the Super Bowl - and I get extra points for forgetting which weekend it is. And for forgetting which month.

Albert is loved in STL. He has a foundation that actually helps the kids of the city. He’s always been the real deal.
No drugs needed to hit the ball. His eye hand coordination is the best since Babe. Bonds on the other hand.... leaves a bad stain on the game.

Rumor is that he’s older than the official age, making it more impressive that he’s still performing well.

Latin American players sometimes shaved a year or two off their age, which made them more valuable as prospects. A 15 year old who can hit a ball 400 feet is a lot more impressive than a 17 year old.

Not only one of the all-time greats on the field but by all accounts a fine human being. Of the four members of the 700-HR club, neither he nor Hank Aaron ever hit 50 homers in a single season.

Hank Aaron might still be here to witness Pujols' feat if it weren't for his taking the vaccine last year (to show others that it was safe).

Pujols was very popular with the Dodger players last year (and before that).

Wish they could have had a roster spot for him in 2022 but with only 12 position players for most of the year there was no place for him.

There are advantages to not having a TeeVee.
