Jack Dawson didn't die at the end of the movie "Titanic." He swam down to Tampa Bay.
- That's what you would think, walking into the home of @titanicfan97.
What's happening: The 30-year-old Largo resident, who's known only by his username, has gathered a cult following of nearly 50,000 social media users, mostly through TikTok, as he builds the self-proclaimed world's largest collection of "Titanic" on VHS.
- He gave Axios an exclusive look at the collection that's now surpassed 500 copies.
Once he collects 500 more, @titanicfan97, who asked to remain anonymous, told Axios he'll reveal his face to his fans.
- "I think the mystery is good," he said. "I just love making content and having fun, and I love 'Titanic' on VHS."
Why it matters: The VHS format has been dead for nearly 20 years, piling up in thrift stores. But our "Titanic" fan has turned those rejected piles into a scavenger hunt for people around the world as they help build his collection.
- He's received tapes mailed from as far away as Australia, and he's drained Tampa Bay of all its copies. If you're looking for one, you'll need to drive at least an hour away.

I have one for sale.
Glad he found his life’s work.
Does he work for the Bee on his days off?
As an aside, way back in 1998, Fred Meyer (Pacific Northwest Chain like a smaller Walmart) was selling DVD players and if you bought one, you got a free copy of Titanic. On VHS.
Isn’t that stuff flammable?
Never understand the appeal of uselessly collecting ‘stuff’.
Yea, he is not hurting anyone, so I don’t care - but he couldn’t have funneled his money and energy into something more productive than this?
I wonder how many VHS players he has.
Figures someone who likes that lame movie would pull a lame stunt like this.
Beta Max 4 Life!
“Life well spent!”
Finding it on Super 8, now that would be something
Something better would be a VHS tape of the original Star Wars movie - people who are geekier than I am say the original Star Wars movie has been edited over the years. I don’t get why one would want hundreds of identical copies of one movie.
Now that, would be impressive.
Seems like a harmless hobby. Maybe he knows what assets will survive this latest recession/inflation cycle.
How to become mentally ill:
Step 1- Join twitter.
Step 2- Seek fame on twitter.
Step 3- Repeat step 2.
The boat sinks.
If Titanic had come out a year or so earlier, it might've been available in Beta format. Commercial Beta recordings could be longer, too - the VHS version of Titanic required two tapes, IIRC. Might've fit on a single Betamax cassette.
That’s pretty much what the movie is about.
