Lily the cat enjoys spending time outdoors and exploring. She “owned the block” in her old neighborhood, owner Stefanie Whitley said, but always made sure to come home.
That all changed when her family moved to a new neighborhood in Mastic Beach. “I was really nervous about bringing her to a new area with how she would react,” Whitley said.
Whitley was right to be worried. About two weeks after moving in, Lily went missing.
“Normally she comes home, but this time felt different and I didn’t think that Lily was coming home,” Whitley said.
About four days after Lily went missing, Whitley and her family were sitting at home in the evening when their Ring doorbell rang. Whitley said she and her family were startled, wondering who was at their doorstep that late at night.

We had a grey for 17 years. Vet eas convinced he was a Chatreux. He had a Beagle brother for 13 of those years. When we left the house to take our Beagle on his last journey our daughter stayed home. She told us that once we left the house the cat started crying. Ran to the window to see us get into the car. Then he ran upstairs to our daughter’s room, jumped on the window and cried loudly as we drove away.
Thanks. I do have a small cat carrier with a nice mattress. I use it for my cat. Suppose I could take out the mattress if if by some miracle, I get Louise in. Unless she’s really cold, she races off the deck if I get too close.
I’ve tried giving her catnip to make her relaxed enough to use the little cat house I bought for her, hoping she’ll use it when it gets cold. She isn’t even slightly interested. Maybe when it gets even colder she will be.
My last cat had learned to turn a door knob to let himself out at about a year old.
Friends who saw it would be shocked and say what a smart cat he was, I’d reply that if he was so smart then why doesn’t he close the door after himself /-).
Half Siamese and I wondered half bobcat,,, he was huge,,, never meowed, just a sort of growl, was so fierce he would sit up in the hedge and ambush stray dogs from above. Couple months of that , wasn’t a stray dog that would come near my place. He also like to ride on my 454ltd motorcycle tank .
Put the crate out and leave the door open. Every day put the tuna on a dish and put it in the crate.
Keep it up for a few days until the cat gets used to eating and then just walking out.
Before long you will have an opportunity to just shut the door.
.
Great idea. Will try it. Thanks.

My cat, Bootycat (she has big fluffy “bloomers”) always wakes me at 5:00 AM. She even knows when the time change is. Who knows.
Will Louise play with a laser pointer? We have a very smart cat whom I was able to get to chase the red dot clear into the carrier. Once. Now he won’t chase the dot at all. I don’t know how I’ll get him in the carrier next time; ice cream might work. Once.
My best ever cat Leon was originally an outdoor cat when I got him, but that was in town. When we moved to a rural area full of coyotes, owls, and bobcats we kept him inside. One night he got out and we just couldn’t find him (naturally he saw no reason to come when called). He loved people food so we cooked a pan of bacon and left it on the counter while we searched. After an hour we have up and headed back. He was sound asleep next to the empty bacon pan.
Great idea. Louise was here for dinner earlier, had a nice rest afterwards on the door mat, and now she’s gone. Will try tomorrow with the little red light. Daisy likes it sometimes, sometimes not. So we’ll see about Louise.
When my boxer, Dixie, passed away, our tabby went into mourning. Cried, sulked, would run to the door every time it opened and then drop his tail and go back to the dog bed when he saw Dixie wasn’t there.
My middle child broke down one day talking about Dixie and the tabby came over, crawled into his lap, and nuzzled him. They stayed like that for quite a while while Shawn wept, cuddling that cat. When my son got up and encouraged the cat to play, my tabby finally responded.
People think cats are not emotional. They are.
As a last resort, wrap her in a bath towel and stuff the whole bundle in the carrier.
