I have a Mossberg 500- virtually the same shotgun (but better) and I agree with you 100%. I load mine with alternating shot/slug rounds. First round - shot. A truly devastating weapon in close quarters.

Just swapped my 28 inch barrel for an 18 1/2 inch on my 870, and it is in fact leaning up against the nightstand.

For indoors a heavy bird/swan shot (3-5)is at least as effect as buck shot and less likely to wound a passerby or neighbor.
