Quarterback Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers broke his ankle during Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.
According to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Lance will undergo season-ending surgery on Monday. When Lance went down with the injury, Jimmy Garoppolo took over the starting quarterback duties.
Garoppolo was sharp in the absence of Lance. He threw the football for a touchdown on his first full drive of the game and rushed into the end-zone for another score, according to ESPN. He seemed to pick up right where he left off.
Over the offseason, Garoppolo was benched for the young 22-year-old, Lance. The decision came as a bit of a surprise considering how Garoppolo carried the 49ers to the NFC Championship game just last season. He also played a part in San Francisco reaching and nearly winning Super Bowl 54, back in 2020.
Despite coming up just shy of winning a championship, Garoppolo has consistently won games for San Francisco since he was traded there in 2017.
According to Pro Football Reference, Garoppolo is 33-14 as a starting quarterback. He has thrown for 71 touchdowns and 38 interceptions. He has been an above-average QB as far as stats are concerned and wins football games more than twice as often as he loses them.
Will Garoppolo prove to the 49ers front office that benching him for the younger Trey Lance was the wrong decision to make?
Actually now that you mention it, that’s probably true. One would actually be inclined to give a fair hearing to any credible testimony from a credible source to that effect...
Wouldn’t “The vaccines will mess up your ankles and you’ll get hurt if you play NFL football” be more plausible than “The vaccines are safe and effective”?
The broken ankle ended his season, not the surgery. Good luck to him in rehab.
Garoppolo is a good QB so I’m not sure why was he benched in the first place?
I don’t follow the NFL or my former fav 49er team much anymore, but I was under the impression the Niners had traded Garoppolo in the offseason. They’re probably glad they didn’t.
-—— They had no takers, mainly due to the high cost of assuming his contract. Jimmy agreed to a salary reduction to avoid being outright cut. -——
Jimmy Garoppolo is about to get paid with Trey Lance injured for rest of 2022
One of the ways the 49ers made it work with regards to keeping Garoppolo around this season was to reduce his $24.2 million base salary for the final year of his current contract down to $6.5 million fully guaranteed, according to Over the Cap.
That freed up roughly $18 million in much-needed cap space, which the Niners could either spend on building the best support group possible around Lance this season, extend players into 2023 and beyond or roll over into next year.
However, Garoppolo’s reworked deal included plenty of incentives, ones which San Francisco probably never envisioned actually taking place: additional money for snaps and wins, among other things.
Here are two, courtesy of Niners Nation’s Akash Anavarathan, that stand out to monitor:
$250,000 per game in which Garoppolo plays at least 25 percent of snaps
$100,000 per win
With Garoppolo on the winning side of Week 2, and also having played well above 25 percent of offensive snaps, he’ll earn $350,000 right out of the gate.
Multiply that by 16 regular-season games remaining (including Week 2), Garoppolo could earn an additional $5.6 million, and that doesn’t even include a multitude of other incentives worked into his contract.
OTC has a max value of almost $14 million Garoppolo could earn this season, which is a substantial spike over the $6.5 he was originally likely to receive.
Sure, it might not be remotely close to the $24.2 million he could have received, had the 49ers traded him earlier this offseason.
But the chance to more than double his 2022 paycheck is nonetheless a massive win for Jimmy G.

Me either, but I guess Fate has other ideas...................😉
