Scooter battery blamed for Queens blaze that killed 8-year-old girl
New York Post ^ | September 18, 2022 | Georgett Roberts, Social Links for Georgett Roberts

A lithium battery from her sibling’s new electric scooter caused the blaze that killed an 8-year-old girl in Queens, fire officials and neighbors said Sunday — as residents recalled the frantic futile effort to save the child.

“The firefighter took the girl out first. He was carrying her in his arms,” said resident Daniel Calle, 27. “She looked like she was asleep.

“They were working diligently on her. They were pumping her chest. … But she wasn’t moving.”

Shaken resident Dora Dellis, 72, added, “There were about six or seven people around her.

“The [landlord’s wife] was crying.”

She was saying, “I don’t care about the house. I don’t want the girl to die,” the witness said.

Fire officials said a scooter caused the blaze, and the landlord added that the electric device had been recently bought by the family for one of the little girl’s teenage brothers.

“They just bought that stupid thing,” the landlord said of the scooter. “I think they got it a month, a month and a half ago. Most of the time, the bike is here. [The girl’s dad] told me it was for his son but he uses it, too.”

The dead girl, identified as Stephanie Villa Torres, suffered smoke inhalation and was pronounced dead at New York Presbyterian Hospital of Queens, authorities said.

...

“Those batteries, they gotta do something about those batteries because it’s too many lives they are losing,” she added.

“It was one of the most intense fires I had ever seen,” he said. “The child’s mother was standing within 50 feet of it hollering, ‘My baby, my baby.’ And there was a feeling of being so helpless.”

can hardly believe taxpayer-funded, climate hysterics ABC Australia are finally reporting some inconvenient truths about lithium-ion battery fires.

note the QFES admission they haven’t been focusing on these fires until now! figures for state of Queensland (pop approx 5million).

note they claim they happen predominantly when they are charging...except for when they are just put in the trash can and get shaken & stirred!

finally, and probably the reason for the article in the first place, there’s the admission lithium-ion may be on the way out!

if they abandon lithium-ion, will the expensive roll-out of electric chargers work with their replacement, or will a whole new set of chargers have to be funded worldwide?

17 Sept: ABC Australia: Fears fires caused by lithium-ion batteries will ‘increase considerably’ as popularity of electric scooters rises
By Melanie Vujkovic
There were 46 fires ignited by the common type of batteries in Queensland during the last financial year.

This is the first time statistics specifically listing them as the cause of a blaze have been kept, after Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) crews noticed it becoming more common.
Superintendent Mark Halverson, executive manager of QFES’s safety section, said the number is “increasing rapidly”...

(Ruth Knibbe, a researcher at the University of Queensland’s School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering): “The fires predominantly occur when your battery is charging.”...

Superintendent Halverson said people should also take care when disposing of batteries, whether because they have reached their use-by date or they have been damaged...
Brisbane City Council said over the past three years there had been 28 known instances of garbage trucks having to dump their loads onto the street after catching fire, however the cause of these fires cannot always be determined...

Researchers at the University of Queensland are among teams around the world trying to develop a “faster-charging and more sustainable” aluminium-ion battery alternative...

Got your intense fire right here:

https://youtu.be/u2F9HKZ5VzA

Granted, it was a Chinese battery, Chinese Car, being charged in China, and was a bigger battery - but look how fast and dense the smoke is and the intensity of the blaze.

The death of one small child is a small price to pay when it contributes to saving Mother Gaia from "climate change".

Saw a electric bus fire video. You had about 10 seconds before the thing evolved into a bus size Roman candle spewing molten metal. Scary .

That’s horrible. This must have happened miles away from anybody. Nobody is seen running about looking at the inferno.
Umm...Does Elon Musk sell EV cars with lithum batteries like these? Until there is some rapid way to put that fire out, these are not safe to sell at all. A friend of mine is always bragging about the conveniances of his electric car. I’m going to refer him to this video.

Anyone who has seen a lithium battery burn will know what a problem this is.

I poked a hole in a phone battery while trying to replace it and the damned thing went off like a sparkler and just as hot. We had to toss it out the window to prevent a house fire.

I once accidentally shorted out a 7AH, 12V battery like that used for alarm panels and it turned the wire red-hot and melted the insulation right off of it.

Rechargeable batteries of any kind don’t like to be shorted out. They will put out more than enough energy to start a fire!

Understand that when you poked a hole in that battery, you shorted it out.

Some years back, I had an elderly iPhone stored in a cabinet, I pulled it out one day to get a part off it, and the whole thing was blown up like a bloated tick!

I don’t think they’re going to get a whole nation into lithium battery cars. They’ll try to compel most folks to take public transit on lithium torch-buses.

That is why I was taught decades ago to never wear my wedding ring when doing automobile work. Just imagine the discomfort of a puddle of liquid gold on your ring finger.

I’ve heard of people accidentally getting an aerosol can across car battery terminals. It goes BOOM!
