I’ll have to try those if I see any here in AZ.

“Guess best Apple ‘arguments’ are like best BBQ ‘arguments’ - all a matter of taste...”

I prefer a tart apple for baking and eating, with chunks of Extra Sharp Cheddar on the side, of course.

Jazz, Braeburn, Lady, Cortland...

At home I have Liberty, Honeycrisp and Wolf River. I gotta get picking, or find someone to ‘Tom Sawyer’ into doing it for me! ;)

BBQ Sauce? Sweet Baby Ray’s! :)

Look into the spray-free apple series from Jung’s. Liberty, Enterprise and Freedom.

They’ve got to have some of those Malus sieversii qualities bred into them. I have Liberty and it is a fantastic producer with NO bug issues. (I’ve never spray any of our apple/fruit trees).

Beau has planted those three (twice!) on the edge of one of our deer food plots, but even with protection, the deer keep eating them before they can even produce. Of course, they leave the mature, wild apple trees in the pasture alone!

Truly an exercise in futility.

I’ve seen some Maples turning already and the Sumac and some of the other wild shrubs are coloring up.

Lots of Goldenrod in bloom right now, which is bright yellow and the soybean fields are also going from green to yellow, then to brown for harvesting.

I second Pete’s suggestion: you need to pollinate them yourself. A small paintbrush to dab with, or even an electric toothbrush to vibrate each little blossom. Some folks just tap tap tap each branch.

Yes, I too remember Winesaps and Macintoshes from childhood and haven’t seen either in ages. And the facetiously-named Delicious is inedible. Nowadays I’ll occasionally splurge on a Honeycrisp, but mostly I stick to a 3-pound bag of organic Galas or Granny Smiths. Since learning of the huge amount of pesticides used on apples (they’re one of the “dirty dozen”) I stick to organics.

Fruit set still depends upon your temperatures, even if it has ‘cooled off.’

If your nighttime temps are still above 70, that’s part of the problem. Also, how’s the humidity? High humidity causes the pollen to become ‘grainy’ and that prevents good pollination, too.

If it were me? I’d leave them in the ground, keep them watered and give them a shot of fertilizer. You should still have plenty of time in Zone 7 to produce a late crop of tomatoes, I’d think.

I do have 2 in the ground, but all the rest are in containers. Will do as you & the other gardening FReepers suggest, regardless. With as crazy as the weather has been this whole year, who knows? There may still be a chance for fruit-setting up to Nov. :-)

I have plenty of small paintbrushes lying around, so I think that’s the way I’ll go. Fingers crossed! :-)

I’ve noticed that sometimes when a plant “pauses”, it’s because the plant is working to establish more roots. Other times, it’s because the plant doesn’t like the weather and is waiting for less stressful conditions. I would leave them be.

Very timely! It’s ‘Apple Pie Assembly Line’ at my house, today.

Three done so far, wrapped and in the freezer. Ran out of a few ingredients, so I’ll make more in the near future.

Lots of apples to use up this year. Already made Apple Sauce and Apple Butter, but I think there will be more of both in the near future, too. :)

Pies! Envy! (Apples) Baldwin Apples! (Speaking of Baldwin!)

JUST IN: Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) tests positive for COVID-19

The Senator writes: "Thankfully, I am vaccinated and boosted and only experiencing minor symptoms. I will quarantine while I continue to work remotely."

Umhum.

‘Work’ is a very loose term for ‘our’ Tammy. Haven’t seen any yet, and she’s going on two decades in DC. Ugh! We need a decent challenger to her. Two Republican Senators for Wisconsin would be awesome. (Ron Johnson is our other Senator.)

Retrieved my mail yesterday (it’s a 2-mile trip to the mailbox and back; I only do it a few times a week...) and that edition of ‘Southern Living’ was inside! Yay!

For some reason, they’ve been subbing one magazine for others that are going out of print. I think ‘Martha Stewart Living’ is finally ending it’s, what, 40 year run? Love her or hate her, she knows her stuff. I’ve learned a lot from her through the years about gardening, house plants and cooking.

Temps here are slated to go from the high 80's to the mid-60's by this Thursday, so I am gleaning the garden of any and all tomatoes that are still out there. They will go into my big roasting pan with EVOO, garlic, onion and herbs (Parsley, Rosemary & Basil) and be roasted then frozen for later use in Lasagna, Spaghetti & 'Weber-balls' (LOL!), etc. Great way to use up whatever is left when you are sick to DEATH of canning.

I made three Apple Pies with French Crumb Topping, yesterday. Used 'Liberty' and 'Honeycrisp' apples straight off of my trees. They are in the freezer for future baking. I need a few more supplies and I'll be making more pies, plus more Apple Sauce and Apple Butter.
