Germany promised Ukraine weapons but hasn’t delivered. Now, anger toward Berlin is rising

Tensions over Germany’s provision of Leopard tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine — or lack thereof — came to a head this week when Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba publicly asked why Berlin was backtracking on a pledge made to send these weapons to Ukraine.

In April, Germany promised to give Leopard tanks and Marders to Ukraine. Rather than deliver them directly, it proposed a swap scheme. The intention was that NATO members, Poland or Slovakia for example, could send Ukraine older Soviet-era tanks (such as Leopard 1s), and Germany would then replenish their stocks with its own more modern equivalent weapons (such as Leopard 2s).

Analysts say that criticism is not entirely deserved, however, noting that after the U.S. and U.K., Germany has been one of the biggest donors of weapons to Ukraine...these deliveries include a number of Gepard SPAAGs (self-propelled anti-aircraft guns), man-portable air-defense systems (known as MANPADS, they’re portable surface-to-air missiles), howitzers and anti-tank weapons, as well as hundreds of vehicles and millions of rounds of ammunition. The German government has also published a list of the military equipment it has sent to Ukraine, right down to 125 pairs of binoculars it has donated.

Germany’s Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said sending more heavy weaponry to Ukraine was “not so simple.”

“It’s not so simple just to say: I’ll just risk that we won’t be able to act, the defense of the country, by giving everything away. No, I won’t do that,” she said. “But we have other possibilities, from industry, with our partners,”

Ukraine has been left fuming and disappointed by Germany’s stance, leaving Kyiv to question Berlin’s commitment to supporting it as the war continues into the fall and likely the winter...

I guess Germany might lose its spot in Ukraine’s victory parade through Red Square.

Might be just as well.

Time to give NATO an ultimatum - 2% on defense spending or we pull out

Concentrate on the Americas and Asia and let the Euros figure it out themselves.

The Germans need to assist the Galicians to come up with a final solution for Ukraine. The more things change… the more they stay the same lol.

Berlin is having trouble finding any ammo stores that have supplies left. All they see are order forms with delivery dates 3 years out.

Our M-1 Garand. Are 30-06 bullets overdoing it in war? The AR-15 used .223’s. Just asking.

I have a feeling the Germany people are angry at exploding energy prices, inflation and seeing their businesses shutdown and their jobs lost and don’t give a damn about whether its government gave Ukraine weapons or not.

Germans only gave Ukrainian weapons when they guarded the Death Camps.

Solzhenitsyn wrote that there was one common thing between Stalin’s and Nazi camps: you was guarded by the Ukrainians.

I always note why the Germans didn’t do the same with the Poles. They knew better, because the first thing the Pole would do with the rifle would be to shoot the German.

The power plants should be converted to run on gasoline.

Jets use liquid fuel turbines.

Here is probably why Germany is seemingly having second thoughts...

“Russia´s ambassador to Germany, Sergey Nechaev, said that the supply of German-made lethal weapons to the Ukrainian regime is the ‘red line’ that the authorities in Berlin should not cross.”

‘Russia warns Germany over lethal weapon supply to Ukraine’

Time will tell.

The M1 Garand does indeed take a .30-06 cartridge; in my humble opinion it is one of the greatest rifle rounds ever. (can you tell by my screen name?). The venerable .30-06 is a tested-and-true combat round.

(A bit of history: During the Korean War many of our troops were outfitted with the M1 Carbine, which fired the lighter (110-grain) and rather anemic .30 caliber round, compounded by its smaller casing holding less propellant; also, the carbine did not fire a spitzer bullet. The result was a very underwhelming performance against thickly clothed Chinese troops: Our guys wanted the heavier (174-grain) and deeper-penetrating spitzer bullet of the .30-06 cartridge.)

General George Patton called the M1 Garand the greatest battle rifle in history.
