I’ve been in a few central offices way back in the 1980s. Besides the switches- rows of them - the batteries and also a generator room. I think with the changes in technology there are a lot fewer such central offices.

I left PacBell in Nov 1991. My days as a Toll Equipment Engineer spanned from May 1980 to May 1983. At that point I moved to software development/support. My current employment is primarily software development. I did a lot more component level hardware design from 2001 to 2008 in addition to writing the firmware, data comm, DSP, database and web interfaces.

Suffice to say, the CO hardware as it was when I switched tasking has changed a lot.
