In the midst of their three-night run at the Masonic in downtown San Francisco on Tuesday night, Pavement became the band they were destined to be.
They were no longer content to generate the most noise on stage, choosing instead to turn their instruments down a notch so that their sonic cohesion could flourish. (Guitarist Scott Kannberg has credited Wilco for this adaptation.) A surprise sixth member, keyboardist and percussionist Rebecca Clay Cole, was added to this tour, and her textural additions allowed the band to finally perform certain cuts that could never survive outside the studio.
For perhaps the first time in his entire stint as Pavement frontman, Stephen Malkmus was palpably having fun on stage. His iconic sashaying presence was matched by an explosive and meticulous dexterity that confirms that he’s one of the best guitarists alive. It only took a reunion tour, the second in two decades, and 23 years since their last album release for the titans of slacker rock to finally seize achievement.
As the quintessential 1990s indie rock band — which formed in Stockton in 1989 to release five albums, before disbanding in 1999 — Pavement remains entwined with the decade. Often labeled slackers for their carefree swagger, the band even earned the immortal critique that “They need to try harder!” during a “Beavis and Butt-Head” couch gag.
Following their amicable disbanding, the members of Pavement embraced their 30s by pursuing other musical projects — the most popular being Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks — or by focusing on families, race horses, and in the case of their second drummer Steve West, becoming a stonemason.

Never heard of them. All are in their mid-50’s. 90’s band? A music decade the baby boomers couldn’t get into.
I approached their security guard and said “I want to meet the Pavement.”
Bad choice of words.
I will have to check them out.
I once met Wilco. They asked me the first name of the co-pilot in Airplane.
I said, "Roger, Wilco."
Well, that's all for me, folks. I'm out of here.
Here is a taste of them:
heros?
Boy, it's just like Marty said -- "Watch me for the changes and try an' keep up, okay?"
רִצְפָּה: floor, pavement, ground
Rav Naḥman said that a Sage taught in the Tosefta: And the Rabbis say that the Ark of the Covenant was buried in the Chamber of the Woodshed. Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak said: We, too, have learned in a mishna: There was an incident involving a certain priest who was occupied with various matters, and he saw a floor tile [רִצְפָּה] in the woodshed that was different from the others. One of the marble floor tiles was higher than the rest, suggesting it had been lifted out and replaced. He came and informed his friend of the uneven tile, but was unable to finish his report and provide the exact location of the tile before his soul departed from his body. And consequently they knew definitively that the Ark was buried there, but its location was meant to be kept secret. Then it turned out that John Goodman played King Ralph.https://www.sefaria.org/Yoma.54a.7?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en
Worse yet is that it was Pee Wee Herman who said, "Take a picture, it'll last longer."
I’m 38 minutes into their one hour 38 minute YouTube concert. Not that good. No one likes a song the first time they hear it. 2-3 of them should not be wearing t-shirts and baseball caps on stage. Too frumpy. Surprised the venue is packed. I was a big concert animal-70’s 80’s + the old rocker reunion tours. The music was really good back then. Not so now. Nothing original.
Yeah, loved pavement until terror twilight. Awesome band.
Pavement? Not so much. I listened to Three Day Stubble, Nine Inch Nails and Ride when living in SF in the 1990’s.
I’ve always liked them, never seen them live.
OK so I heard Frontwards. Not bad at all. Back to the frumpy factor. The female backup singer looks even worse in the live concert version. In this business you gotta look good. The least they could do is take off more than a couple stones.
How many times do people need to be told,
“Know your plaice”?
