A strike could have a significant impact on the energy industry, and could hurt consumers who would likely end up paying more for gasoline, electricity and natural gas. Refineries might have to halt production if they can’t get the deliveries they need, or if they don’t have access to rail to ship gasoline.

No one wants to risk leaving flammable chemicals stranded on the railroad tracks if a strike occurs. That’s why railroads began curtailing shipments of hazardous materials on Monday to protect that dangerous cargo.

Roughly 300,000 barrels of crude oil move by rail each day, which could supply about two mid-size refineries, according to AFPM. And about 5 million barrels of propane, representing a third of U.S. consumption, are moved by rail monthly, the group said.

Roughly 70% of ethanol produced in the U.S. is shipped by rail, and ethanol accounts for about a tenth of U.S. gasoline volume, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights. Nearly 75% of the coal moved to electric utilities in the first half of 2022 was moved by rail, the group said."

Unionized railroad workers are governed by the Railway Labor Act (RLA) which is administered by the National Mediation Board (NMB). The RLA covers railroads and airlines.

Unlike other unions operating under the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), The RLA does not allow for strikes unless the NMB approves first.

resident Slow-Joe empanelled a Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) which studies the issue and has 30 days to make a recommendation to the the parties involved. This is followed by a 30 day cooling off period before a strike can commence.

The PEB was empanelled on July 15. Here we sit on the cusp of 60 days later and the eve of a strike.

This could only happen if the PEB recommended , and the NMB approved the strike.

The NMB is comprised of 3 presidential appointments. The chairwoman was a former flight attendant union president appointed by Obozo. The second is a former Teamsters attorney appointed by Buyden. The third is a President Trump appointee with 40 years experience in railroad and transportation.

To make the point crystal clear, this strike can only happen because it was blessed by the Biden administration and approved by a democrat controlled NMB.

So you can spare me the liberal gnashing of teeth about the upcoming supply chain fiasco. It cannot be blamed on Trump, or global warming, or COVID, or whatever else the left has a burr under its saddle about.
