“It amazes me that in one of the wealthiest, opportunity-rich and still (relatively) free nations, half of us can’t plan/save for retirement. Or a home. Or the rent. Or a car. Or next weeks groceries...”

Very simple. Most people aren’t all that smart. We have a free society where all people are supposedly treated equally.
Because of political clout( eg Democrats) these people warp the system to their benefit at our loss. A consequence of that, is resources to long term benefit people in need are looted for the short term benefit of idiots(AKA Democrat voters, and elitists).
Social security is compromised, Medicare is broke, rational housing decisions can’t be made, Mentally ill people can’t be cared for, I could go on and on.
enough ranting.
Solution - repeal the 16th and 17th amendments and wait a generation or two. That isn’t going to happen so prepare for the worst.

Yep. Government-induced problems, with seemingly no solutions, are battering us on every shore. Glad I’m on the back-end of my run. :(
