In a way, they’re right. But they need to find the Goldilocks Zone. In general, we (the worker bees) all work too much. That takes a toll.

Agreed. The standard corporate rat race has been a bad deal for many people. Life in a cubicle is not fun. There are better ways to make a living, and you may have to work hard, and work long hours, especially if you decide to work for yourself. But if your path is just to be a cog in a giant corporate wheelhouse, killing yourself trying to make the boss happy turns out to be a pretty thankless task.

I don't mind working long and hard, but being in tech, I've seen my share of death march projects, and (at one company especially) periods of 80 to 100 hr. weeks for 6 months or more, including holidays (everyone was doing it, it was like a badge of honor to them)(I quit when I was on a proposal team and found out they build that into every schedule).
So finding a "little" more balance isn't being lazy to me.

When I retired early (well, kind of early: 55) My income went down to 35% of what I made before. I had to relocate to an area with a much lower cost of living. But there's nothing inherently wrong with not working as hard as long as you cut your expenses as well. Live within your means--whether it's a Top of Your Game grind, or a Barely Coasting By--and you won't get any guff from me.
